After remixing Drake’s “Houstatlantavegas” in 2009, JoJo puts a sassy spin on the Young Money’s star’s latest “Marvin’s Room.” The 20-year-old singer flips the script, offering the female perspective to Drizzy’s drunken phone call. Just like her mixtape, she experiments with an edgier sound on the one-off record, cooing in a sultry voice while reminding her ex why she’s the best he’s ever had.

“Fuck that new girl that you like so bad/ She’s not crazy like me, I bet you like that/ I said fuck that new girl that’s been in your bed/ And when you’re in her, I know I’m in your head,” sings a sleep-deprived JoJo on the risqué remix, which features production from Jordan Gatsby and additional vocals from Travis Garland.

Technically, this is better than Drake’s version, but what did you expect ? She’s a singer and he’s a rapper. However, IMO, Drake’s version is “realer” and his voice sticks way better to that situation than JoJo’s seemingly angelic and cristallin voice. When I hear Drake in that song, it sounds like a drunk idiot, it smells like a hangover. When I hear JoJo, I hear a beautiful voice, but that is all. I feel no true emotions related to the topic of the song. I know it sounds old-school, but I always find it awkward to hear such a girly and beautiful voice saying things like “and when you’re in her, I know I’m in your head”. Lol ! Oh I guess that’s because I always saw Jojo as that 15 years old singing fancy songs like “Get Out”. Oh boy time flies :-)

I love this track but I know EXACTLY what you mean!
Men are usually a bit more out of control and woman are a bit more “put together” though- so maybe the critique of Jojo is the biggest strength?
I mean I hate when women lose the feminine and wear the masculine instead, so if she did try the whole “drunk” thing it would just make her sound “whoreish” especially when combined with those lustful lyrics.

I respect your opinion, be sure of that. And I am also aware that this performance might stand out of the pack (her previous works).

But I think that this song really fits Drake. When you see him on his website’s photos, on events, etc., he always looks melancholic, and with that beard and the hair, he looks neglected, which could be related to sadness, melancholia, etc. This is a really decadent song, about a man who is pathetic and desperate. It reflects the image and the general mood seemingly felt by the artist. My point is that his voice is a big part of that song. So hearing another voice (that kind of voice, moreover), from a girl, who is apparently not such a mess, is awkward.

But then again, I don’t deny her talent. As I answered previously, it might be a way to affirm that she has become an adult, and can be seen as such, rather than a teenager.
