Jay Z Honors Rap's Golden Era with 'Brick Phone' Playlist

  /  10.01.2016

Jay Z hops in the DeLorean and goes back in time to the late ’80s and early ’90s for his latest TIDAL playlist.

Featuring a slew of hip-hop classics, the 35-track homage is titled “Brick Phone.” That, of course, is another nod to what many consider rap’s Golden Era.

Boogie Down Productions kick things off with “My Philosophy,” one of the most revered tracks of the decade. From there, the set goes from New York staples like “Rock the Bells” by LL Cool J to West Coast classics like Eazy-E’s “Boyz-N-The-Hood.”

The playlist has clearly inspired Jay throughout his life. For example, “It’s Funky Enough” by The D.O.C. comes off his critically-acclaimed album No One Can Do It Better, which Hov referenced on “Public Service Announcement.” Big Daddy Kane’s “Ain’t No Half Steppin'” also makes the list, a track Jigga referenced on both “Fuck All Nite” and “My 1st Song.”

Legends fill Hovito’s playlist, which also features Public Enemy, DJ Quik, Audio Two, Schoolly D, Gang Starr, EPMD, RUN-DMC, Slick Rick, MC Breed, Mac Dre, and Geto Boys. Stream the full “Brick Phone” playlist via TIDAL below.
