Nicki Minaj Performs at PowerHouse 2014

Nicki Minaj

It was all about Nicki at Power 106′s PowerHouse 2014 at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday night. Following sets from Jennifer Lopez, Trey Songz, and ScHoolboy Q, the head Barb commanded the stage with a stripped-down set that showcased her hip-hop roots.

A sound bite of Denzel Washington from Training Day played before Nicki emerged from the smoke to “Lookin Ass.” Wearing a Chromat cage bra, red Brian Lichtenberg skirt, and Guiseppi Zanotti ambush boots, the sexy rapper continued with “Chi-Raq” and her remix to “Danny Glover.”

When she was asked to perform at PowerHouse, Nicki told the crowd that she wasn’t prepared and wanted to stand out from fellow performers like J.Lo, Trey Songz, and Juicy J.

“I said what can I do? So I said, ‘Fuck it.’ I’ma go back to my mixtape days and come out with a motherfuckin’ DJ,” she said. “‘Cause there’s one thing they can’t do and that’s be the motherfuckin’ queen of hip-hop.”

Surprise guest Soulja Boy joined her for her latest song “Yasss Bish” before Nicki took it back with her biggest hits including “Super Bass,” “Starships,” and “Moment 4 Life.”

Watch her 30-minute set below.

    @get real blood !,

    Could you link the time-frame where you assumed that she lip synced?

    [Reply]

    Grewtoo Reply:

    @KENBARBUK, I think that ppl confuse lip syncing with is doubling. Rappers double not to miss many words at a large concert. Singers lip sync when they are out of breath or can’t sing. Nicki doubled.

    Anita B. Reply:

    She didn’t lip synch. But she had playback you can clearly see she is rapping live. But I find it annoying that she can’t use just the instrumental and rap, instead of rapping over herself on the existing audio. She sounds so much better when she just raps with no playback. This performance was great though, I love the confidence and her look is slaying. I’m sure this will be her best era yet, I’m actually excited for what is to come from her.

    Her songs can’t hold up after 2-3 years. Even Did It On Em sounded dated. Nicki Minaj has no classics. This is a horrible performance. She forgot the words to her own songs. She only walked around in circles and pulled on her hair. Any time a performer needs to rely on Soulja Boy, it’s a wrap.

    This performance is ICONIC already. #QueenofHipHop

    Super Bass and Starships were the ULTIMATE **** you to everyone (including us). She was so right when she said that we never know exactly what she is going to do. She truly is the queen of hip-hop, MAN.

    IMO, the queen of rap and that’s a much bigger title than queen of hip-hop. She’s transcended her genre multiple times and the Moment 4 Life closing got me in my FEELINGS.

    @This is HoRRible,

    It’s only been 4 years , let’s wait for another 6 years to determine whether she has a classic or not. But don’t sleep on ‘Moment 4 Life’ and some of the singles from the highly anticipated album from her.

    Oh here we go with the ‘lack of Grammy drag’ AND?

    Diana Ross is called the ‘Queen of Motown’ , she doesn’t have a Grammy.

    Tupac is called the ‘King of Rap’, he doesn’t have a Grammy.

    Elvis Presley is called the ‘King of Rock, he has never won a Grammy under the rock category.

    A Grammy doesn’t determine anything.

  10. Realistically

    She told Powerhouse that she wasn’t prepared, and they should have listened. Several thoughts:

    1) The ear-piece? She should have just left it out for good instead of fidgeting with it throughout the entire performance – it’s distracting.

    2) Why is she forgetting the words to her songs? I was really embarrassed for her.

    3) Where is SB? He usually brings the hype to her shows; her energy isn’t that electric to fill the stage on her own. I mean, she had some good moments here and there, but most of her effort was spent on messing with that darn earpiece.

    4) Does this toned-down Nicki mean all of her performances will be toned-down as well? The colors and wigs and flashy stuff made her more interesting and entertaining – and her personality was a little “bigger” … now, she seems kinda … basic.

    5) Thought she was done with pop?

    6) Though y’all ain’t like Soulja Boy? Oh, he cool now? Lol.

    Overall, I miss her theatrics. They were great for her live performances. This was just bleh. So I hope she works on that. Looking forward to the single, though. Keep evolving, Nicki.

    [Reply]

    Yaya Reply:

    @Realistically, Um, If you did you research you would know that she was fidgeting with the ear piece to connect with the people, not because she was having sound problems, she said she had a blast, etc. And she did the pop song because she clearly doesn’t give a fuck lmao. She did the pop song to recognize what made her successful. Without the pop music she probably wouldn’t have been casted as a judge on American Idol or got that movie role in the other woman.

    @Realistically, i have no prob with her performance,she did her thing. and i have no prob with her looks, reminds me of her back in the day. earpiece are not the audience was happy and was enjoying there selves and so was I.and Pop music is apart of her what you wanted her to do just cut off starships and other rap-pop hit songs of hers,Nicki is a artist even though she is a hip-hop artist.

    [Reply]

    Andy Reply:

    @Realistically,

    1) yes
    2) she never forgot the words. The track volume was too high, you could barely hear her. Stupid DJ/producers
    3) really?
    4) yes, and sorry but Nicki is done with the antics. Rappers don’t need em
    5) she never said that, she said she won’t do another SuperBass/Starships. She still like her songs, and she is not sorry for doing pop. She performing that songs was awesome. Is like, a hip hop concert and she’s performing pop songs?? NICKI DOESN’T GIVE A FCK
    6) we don’t. Nobody really screamed for him.

    If you miss her theatrics, go watch the understudy Iggy. She’s doing a lot of that.

    As much as I love Nicki, I felt this could’ve been better. I thought it was a good performance as a whole, but between her messing with that earpiece during the whole thing and the fact she actually perform Starships threw me off. I have to agree with Realistically because I kinda miss the theatrics. If she would’ve had like a few dancers or SB out there with her (because that DJ wasn’t doing anything to impress or hype), the performance could’ve been slightly better. But besides those minor details, it was a good performance and I’m looking forward to her upcoming performances, her single Wednesday, and the PinkPrint

So what she didn’t have a Grammy, look at everything else she accomplished. Platium albums, number one in 5 countries! Lil Kim only has one Grammy nd that was because of Mulan rogue. She didn’t get it on her own so have a seat. Y’all killing me with these comparisons! Every female artist had the opportunity to be where nicki is nd they failed. Don’t hate on her, or discredit her. Simple mined like I thought, regardless if I made a reference u couldn’t comprehend but @Andy did, so thank u Andy for bein able to read between the lines. Lil Kim time is over, so she can go have her baby nd have a seat! THE PAST FEMALE RAPPERS ALL HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THE SUCCESS THAT NICKI, has. PERFUMES, CLOTHING, endorsements, ALCOHOL, etc.. Last time I check Trina had a perfume, nd what happened to it? Ooh okay. Lil Kim had an endorsement with Three Olives, nd what happened? AWW OK!
