Miley Cyrus Wanted to 'Make History' with VMA Performance

Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus had everyone talking with her scandalous VMA performance. But the pop star says that was her intention all along.

In an interview with MTV News, Cyrus broke her silence about the polarizing performance.

“Me and Robin [Thicke,] the whole time said, ‘You know we’re about to make history right now,'” she said.

“What’s amazing is I think now, we’re three days later and people are still talking about it. They’re over thinking it,” she said. “You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me.”

She compared it to past VMA show-stoppers from Madonna and Britney Spears. “Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history.”

But don’t think she’s worried about the backlash. “I don’t pay attention to the negative because I’ve seen this play out so many times,” she said. “How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?”

Miley is using the platform to promote her new music. On Oct. 8, she will release her album Bangerz featuring Big Sean, Juicy J, Nelly, and French Montana.
