J. Cole introduced his music to a new audience on ABC’s “The View.” Instead of college kids and hip-hop heads, he performed his platinum single “Power Trip” before an audience of housewives and stay-at-home moms on Tuesday’s show. Afterwards, he discussed topping Kanye on the charts.

“I’m a huge Kanye West fan, so I moved my date to come out on the same day as him just to be competitive about it, so it felt good,” said Cole, whose album Born Sinner is currently No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

He also explained why he felt the need to apologize for his offensive lyric about autism on “Jodeci Freestyle.”

“As rappers, sometimes we try to play with words and be so clever and we take pride, but in this particular instance, it wasn’t clever, it was actually offensive,” said Cole. “The more I educated myself, the more embarrassed I got about it.”

Host Sherri Shepherd, who has a special needs child, told him how much she appreciated his sincerity.

Cole’s mother was especially excited for his appearance. “Doing ‘The View’. Momma just told me she ‘got the whole hood watching.’ hahahaaaaa,” he tweeted.
