Drake and Future's 'What a Time to Be Alive' Debuts at No. 1

  /  09.28.2015

Drake and Future’s mixtape What a Time to Be Alive has met expectations of white-hot sales with a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart.

The surprise project, which was announced a day before its release, moved 375,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Of that total, 334,000 were pure album sales, reports Billboard. While strong, the numbers are less than the 500,000 industry experts had initially predicted.

This marks a return to the winner’s circle for both rappers this year. Drake’s mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late reached No. 1, as did Future’s DS2 LP. The last time a rapper scored two No. 1s in a year was Jay Z back in 2004.

Drake and Future also earn the second-largest sales week of 2015 following Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (495,000), and the third-largest week for an album this year after The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness (412,000) and IYRTITL (535,000).

Mac Miller, meanwhile, opens at No. 4 with his Warner Bros. Records debut GO:OD AM, which sold 87,000 copies (No. 4), two spots behind Lana Del Rey’s Honeymoon (116,000).
