YG Rallies Against Police Brutality in 'FTP' Video
No justice, no peace.
YG leads the revolt against police brutality and systematic racism in the video for his protest anthem “FTP (F**k the Police),” which was shot during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Hollywood on June 7. The rally, which he organized alongside Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, brought out a reported 100,000 people, the largest anti-racism march in L.A.
The black-and-white clip captures footage of social justice protests across the country, including the uprising in the streets of L.A., with images of police brutality and cop cars being vandalized. The Compton rapper stands in the middle of demonstrators on Hollywood Blvd. while holding up signs that read “No justice no peace” and “FDT” as the crowd chants “Fuck the police.”
“It’s the Klu Klux cops / They on a mission / It’s the Klu Klux cops,” raps YG.
Despite the peaceful protest, YG faced backlash for capitalizing off the BLM movement by using it as a backdrop for his video. “For anyone out there talking I don’t question your advocacy and don’t think you should question mine,” he said in response to his critics. “See you gotta understand that a lot of people out there they see me as a N*gga. They don’t see the black proud man. They see a kid from Bompton and they expect violence. They hear FTP and they think I’m gonna come and burn my city. So we showed up and did it right. We proved them wrong.”
The video ends with a message demanding an end to police brutality and encouraging the defunding of the police.
