Report: Nicki Minaj Being Courted by Simon Cowell for ‘X Factor’

Nicki Minaj

After conquering the charts, Nicki Minaj’s next frontier may be television. The Young Money raptress is reportedly in talks with Simon Cowell to be a judge on the U.S. edition of his talent competition “The X Factor.”

The Harajuku Barbie met with Cowell in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, according to Page Six. “Simon thinks Nicki is fantastic. She’s sassy, she looks great, and she has bags of personality,” says a source.

The hip-hop diva’s casting as a judge would help the show appeal to a younger and more diverse audience. “Nicki has a large following and she fits well with the ethos of the show, which plans to usher in a new generation of musical talent,” adds the source. “‘X Factor’ is aiming for a younger audience. Those aged 12 and over can audition, and [the English version has] launched successful artists from other genres of music than pop.”

She is currently touring the country with Lil Wayne and nothing has been finalized. “This isn’t a done deal yet, but Nicki would be great for the show. She fits the ideal that ‘X Factor’ will be exciting, vibrant, and different. And the show would also be great for her career.”

Former Island Def Jam CEO and Chairman L.A. Reid was officially announced as one of the judges for the singing competition, set to premiere this fall on Fox.

That would be such great promo for her! But I side eye Nicki Minaj judging a singing competition.

I Would TOTALLY support this. She’s bring quite a new outlook to a talent competition. I think it’s needed & will be appreciated.

I don’t think she’s proved her talent enough to be a judge of others…never mind, I realized this a reality TV show not a competition based on real talent, she’d be the perfect judge for this!

    Face Reply:

@BK James, Now hold on. This talented competition definitely involves talent, Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis were winners of this competition in the UK.

I just have a problem with her not being very talented and being a judge. She doesn’t have enough of that or experience in the industry to judge this. She needs one or the other for me.

    She certainly has something tho…

@Face i see what u saying but it cleary says simon says he wanted her for her PERSONALITY and fanbase and stuff etc …..he never said anything about her having a eye for talent or having talent for that matter but nicki can hold a note better than some pop singer considering she is a rapper she pretty talented

    [Reply]

    Face Reply:

@felcia, Neither her or Drake hold good notes. When they attempt to sing, they rank amongst the worst, IMO.

As far as her being talented, I guess she’s talented as something, she’s famous. As far as a lyricist? No. I would not say so.

@Face, nicki sang live with katy perry on a show on VH1 and she definately sounded better than katy live which is a HUGE pop singer and she sang save me live on new year and sounded really nice too and drake sounds pretty good live too and again im talking about compared to pop stars that are out now like ke$HA, Rhianna and katy…and she a lyricist to me the way she puts stuff together

    [Reply]

    BK James Reply:

@felcia, I’m not discrediting her as an artist yet, but she hasn’t proved herself either. I like a lot of her songs that she did prior to Pink Friday, but it sucks that she may have completely sold out already. I want her to become a good artist, but this overpromotion is not the way!

    Face Reply:

@felcia, As far as who did better, they both pretty much sounded the same. Ke$ha isn’t a rapper, and Rihanna sings better than her. Rihanna isn’t that great, but that’s what it is.

“Hang it up, flatscreen!” “And my wrist froze, stage fright!” “Get off my dick, bitch, Andy!” She isn’t any lyricist to me spitting lines like that. And she definitely doesn’t rank with the females that came before her.

That’s not to say she has to be this impeccable lyricist, or the greatest; but to SAY you’re “the best” and you haven’t even done anything that qualifies as the best, is reaching. She’s decent at best.

    kellie Reply:

@Face, Kesha isnt a rapper thats the point i was making pop singers out now cant sing live and nicki defiantly sounded better than katy and rihanna sounds way worst than nicki live nicki even bought her out at her concert and she sounded terrible

and wow at u saying she not a good lyricist because of her using that style of rapping sometimes ..J cole is one of the best lyricist out right now and uses that on his mixtape and like i said nicki says stuff and puts words together differently makes u think and please she ranks with all of them that came before her i mean most of them didnt even write their own lyrics cough* lil kim & foxy*

and thats what rappers do they all say they are the best u suppose to be confident i mean ive heard soulja boy and lil b say they are the best and they really suck..i mean every male rapper has said they are the best at some point WHY cant nicki

    [Reply]

    Face Reply:

@kellie, Well Ke$ha isn’t a singer either, so I guess we don’t know what she is. She doesn’t both, but not well. Moving on.

Ok, Rihanna didn’t sound great at Nicki’s concert? Didn’t watch that. I HAVE been to a couple of Rihanna’s shows and she isn’t terrible. And the fact that you really consider Nicki any type of singer is a bit laughable.

As far as female rap goes, MANY female EMs have had lyrics written for them at one point; including MC Lyte who is a pioneer and one of the best female lyricists, and Nicki Minaj. It was said that Kanye actually helped her with her Monster verse. Kim and Foxy have albums that they wrote completely that shit on Pink Friday (The Naked Truth and Broken Silence).

You call it “putting together lyrics differently,” I call it kind of weak. But ppl like it b/c she’s successful. And let’s not bring J. Cole in this b/c regardless if he uses that rap style, he can actually rap. HELLA good.

I’ve never heard Soulja Boy or Lil B say that, but w/e. The problem isn’t that she’s saying she’s the best; its the fact that she’s calling herself the best and doesn’t have work that represent that. At all. We don’t have to agree on whether Nicki can rap or not, but let’s be real here…

NO ! NO! NO! I AM A NICKI FUCKING STAN! AND A SMART PERSON WHEN IT COMES TO HOW AN ARTIST IS PERCEIVED. THIS IS NOT A GOOD LOOK. WE DONT WANT TO OVER PROMOTE NICKI YET. SHE NEEDS TO SAVE THIS FOR THE END OF HER CAREER. AND FOCUS ON MUSIC. NO MOVIES YET, NO TV SHOWS, WAIT AT LEAST 4 YEARS.

    [Reply]

  12. st

I think Nicki should accept this as it would help in strenthing her career and also what you make of your life depends on reasonable decisions.some artist wait till their career is on the brink of extinct before they could take charge but latter find out is not the best for them but in this case, it is a good look for Nicki because she will have a larger audience whenever she makes music thereby encouraging sales.Nicki please take control of your career because as the saying goes OPPORTUNITY COMES BUT ONCE so grab it now and equally make movies.Dont stand at a place but be versatile.TEAM MINAJ.

@gothikarose, the last time she dissed lil kim was in 2010. romans revenge. because kim literally wanted ‘war’. then she said she not gonna diss her no more because she gonna worry about her. now look at what you said and look at kim. in ONE of her interviews in 2011 where does she NOT say nicki minaj’s name? Until you find one dont say ishh. (:

yall sure he dont want her for 1 of the HOST instead of the judge cause i remeber simon saying like 2 weeks ago he wanted a non-conventional fun female superstar for that job and that fits nicki perfectly plus simon mainly talked about liking her personality either way she would work good for either job nicki may not be the most talented but she’s fun and has lots of personality

Nicki Minaj have no talent so why should she be a judge.

@HoustonGirl, Simon doesn’t have Talent either…. So if he can be a judge so can Nicki

@Steve, But Simon is the creator of the show, has a label, and finds talent… so her question is valid.

@Colton, Just wondering how she got killed in the music industry when she has the #1 r&b / hip hop and rap song and a top 20 hit on the billboard hot 100 not to mention her album was top 10 for 15 weeks please shut up and stop hatin nicki is versitle and wants to branch out to other stuff if this is true she not being boxed in at all that’s all

    [Reply]

  20. st

How is she killed in the music industry when she is still dominating charts and hitting No 1? Most of you here leaving shitty comments are just jealous but as you can see with all your jealousy and hatings she still triumph. So keep hating behind your computer instead of doing meanful things with your life. And for your clearity Nicki is full of talents:She is a singer, rapper, actor, and commedian while most of you running your mouth cannot boost of any achievement.

No, it will be a Sony artist on the panel.

Simon is with Sony, LA is going to Sony, and the winner will get the Sony deal.

I am so team nicki. But I think her music career needs to be her only priority right now. She has the potential to be the biggest female rapper to date. Things like hosting shows is what u do later in life after ur fame n success starts to flatline.

She’s definitely energetic, but I can’t see her judging a talent competition. I don’t really see her as being all that talented and her track record isn’t extensive yet. The only rapper I could see judging a competition is Kanye.

i think she will do well, she gets this opportunity at this stage off her carrier,i think she should jump on it,because some opportunity, come once in a life time, don’t listen to people nicki jump on it don’t sit back and be saying you are not ready yet and stuff like that, cowell have is reason why he is considering having you on the show,he said he likes her personalities and fun factor and nicki have that,so we will see how it go,s.

16 million dollars for only a two year contract nicki better get that money

i think nicki will be great for this great personality

    [Reply]

    Me2 Reply:

@kellie, Whaaaat 16 MILLION????!!!!! Thats tempting. However, IDK b-cuz most the people who are judges already had full careers & some are kinda “washed-up”, she’s just now getting on. She should build her career. Money will come… She is talented but its alot she needs to do instead of being a judge on a freaking talent show.

    [Reply]

    ./././ Reply:

@Me2,well that is apart of building her carrier too
she gets more pr and it spreads her music to different set of people and she is on tour now and ofter that she be working on another album, you can’t say a freaking talent show like its nothing,
millions off people is watching it your regular joe
all type of people, you know how many A list cellebs
wanted to be a judge on that show, and if nicki gets the part it will help her and the show
because alot off people will watch the show because of her both lovers and haters.

I love that they’re considering her as a judge, but I feel she’s to young in her career to do something so time consuming. I wanna see her on this show 5 years from now, cause this show WILL make it just as big as American Idol.

    [Reply]

  39. Hmmm

I am a die hard Nicki fan but to be honest, I think she needs to wait a bit. It would be a great opportunity to promote her, of course but this early in her career it would be OVER-promoting. When she’s taking a break from music later on in her career say 1-2 years, then yes it would be fantastic for her.
But whatever decision she makes, I’ll back her no matter what :-)
