Mariah Carey Joins ‘American Idol’ as New Judge

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is taking a seat at the judges’ table. The Grammy-winning diva has joined the cast of “American Idol.”

After rumors surfaced last week, the official announcement was made today by FOX. Mariah will make her debut on the 12th season of “Idol” in January 2013.

“As a singer, songwriter, and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with ‘American Idol’,” said the platinum pop star. “I’m currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant,’ which will be out early next month. I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.”

“Idol” creator and executive producer Simon Fuller welcome her to the family. “We are proud to have one of the world’s greatest-ever female singers join our show,” he said. “Mariah defines the word ‘Idol’ and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.”

Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler announced their departure from the show earlier this month. Mariah, who is good friends with current judge Randy Jackson, appeared as a mentor to the contestants on Season 7.

Mariah is gearing up for the release of her new single “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill.

UPDATE: According to TMZ, Mariah’s “Idol” contract is worth $18 million for one year, which would make her the highest-paid judge in reality telvision. J.Lo reportedly earned $12 million for her first year on the show, while Britney Spears netted $15 million for “X Factor.”

I don’t know why I am so surprised, but MC will be the best thing on that show. Congrats.

@DEEjay, Boy please!! Have you seen this tramp lately? She looks 55, and her voice is shot, Mariah needs to hang it up. American Idol will probably save her little career she has left.

The very person these shows were made to emulate. She knows voice in and out. Easy money, frankly. And she can be in LA with her kids and Nick for a few months and her album would have been out for awhile by then so extra longevity hopefully.

To be honest I STOP watching the show 4 or 5 seasons ago getting Mariah wasn’t a bad choice.

This will probably be like Jennifer Lopez and help with her album sales. I think this is good for her

I was hoping she wouldn’t do it. But now I have a reason to watch Idol. I think she’ll be a great judge.

I seriously hope it won’t affect her negatively. AI will keep her from promoting seriously and she won’t probably making international visits. So I see it a bit of a loss she’ll jpin Idol since I think no one needs this show anymore. Not in Germany (we go into round 11 too), not in the US or elsewhere.

The ONLY really talented and constantly good winner is Carrie Underwood. She went away from the Idol image and launched a hugely successful country career + she’s a doll. No one can reach her (Kelly Clarkson had her ups & downs).

@StrangerInMyHouse, Wow, you’re a bias, ignorant retard who chooses not to see the success of Clarkson & Adam Lambert and chooses not to see the dips in Carrie’s Career. Come back with an education. NEXT.

@indfahj, what about Fantasia, Jordan Sparks, and Jennifer Hudson…they’ve all experienced great success in their post-idol careers…

Even though I stronly believe she is a legitimate judge, I just don’t want to see her and her mannerisms and fake nice attitude.

I stopped watching this show the minute Paula and Simon left. But, truth be told, it’d be going downhill since then. I hope Mariah isn’t bitchy to the contestants like Kim Burrell is to Sunday Best. Burrell acts as if everyone is supposed to be able to sing at the level she does.

    SdotB Reply:

@Triniti, they get paid to be strict with the contestants…besides, the show is called “Sunday Best”, not “Sunday Average”…

if the judges don’t give these competitors “tough love”, they won’t be pushed enough…it’s the judge’s responsibility to ensure that contestants show their fullest potential in the scarce amount of time that they have…

anywho, I believe picking Mariah was a wise decision b/c she’s a legend and the contestants will be honored to be critiqued by someone of her calibur…i also think she will be similar to Paula Abdul in terms of the politeness and compassion for these individuals who are all reaching for their dreams

Keep in mind that THEY needed Mariah. Mariah doesn’t need THEM.

The Queen has spoken, and she will show these sheep how to sing. If they don’t produce someone with a voice that can match the level of this five-octave goddess, AI is #done.

My interest in AI dropped after fantasia won. Now there have been winners i liked since but I just never watched after season 3. Guess Mariah said if the moeny right and she gets promo like JLO did why not
