Frank Ocean Performs on ‘SNL’ Season Premiere

Frank Ocean

The new season of “Saturday Night Live” got underway with the soulful stylings of Frank Ocean. Wearing his signature bandana around his head, the Odd Future crooner was joined on guitar by special guest John Mayer during his two-song set. Seated on a stool, he performed his channel ORANGE hit “Thinkin Bout You,” returning later in the show for “Pyramids.”

I don’t know but his voice deosn’t do a thing to me, he’s like talking the whole song and not singing.

@mia, Totally agree. Apart from Thinking About You, Swim Good and Static I don’t think his songs are that good. Compare that to Miguel…

@JLawls, Frank Ocean and Miguel are on 2 totally different levels. Its like comparing oranges to apples.

Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Usher, Tank way better than him + this dude started that feud with chris which i will never forget smh

    [Reply]

    Sebastian Reply:

@CBE, Tank and Usher have a legacy in the music industry, so I won’t even touch that. But you actually believing Chris and Trey > Frank is one of the stupidest comments left on this forum in the last day alone.

    [Reply]

    Issa Reply:

@CBE, @CBE, Started the feud with Chris? Yeah, right. Chris was INSULTING him. You don’t say that to someone and not expect them to realize the insinuation behind the words is that you’ll always be known as a songwriter rather than a singer. You are laughable. And, instead of this said and inaccurate Frank Ocean shade you’re throwing, you should try and converse with TeamBreezy and figure out why misFortune is being hailed as one of the worse albums of the year. It’s one thing to flop critically, but commercially … I thought you teenagers had the nigga’s back!

    [Reply]

    Grant Reply:

@CBE, You sound all kinds of foolish. And, in particular, if your “idol” is “much better than him,” please tell me why it’s so easily become the flop of the year. I’ll wait, because, clearly, Chris’ ability to put a “pretty motherfucker” on a wall is so deep.

    [Reply]

    Jason Reply:

@Grant, Let me clear things up. Frank started the feud, not Chris. Chris compared him to 2 of the best songwriters in the industry, then Frank responded with the Ike Turner comment. So Frank actually started the feud, not Chris.

    [Reply]

    BrunoBruno Reply:

@Jason, they are not 2 of the best songwriters in music thats the whole reason why frank compared him to ike turner

    [Reply]

    Jason Reply:

@BrunoBruno, go look up Kevin Cossom and James Fauntleroy. You know nothing about the inustry.

    [Reply]

    BrunoBruno Reply:

@CBE, if all those guys are so better than frank ocean then why are you even on a frank ocean post? plus chris brown uses autotune so his on the same level as t-pain right now and trey songz is not on franks level even his pal ne-yo said trey songz is slacking, usher is a legend so whatever and tank i dont listen to his music

@mia he does sounds like he’s talking the whole way.

on a side note, i really think some people forget about the TRULY GREAT singers like Luther Vandross. Luther was a master, paid more dues thank Frank (singing background for the group “Change”) , made true classics, and never let his sexual preference interfere with his music. I love Luther.

Frank is really hyped up right now though. He has talent, but he doesn’t hold water to any true R&B singer. The thing that’s working for Frank is this terrible mainstream music industry. We can admit that mainstream music as a whole is very bad, executives seem to be making sociopolitical decisions to effect the attitude of inner city youth. That’s another story.

One thing is certain, we’re all tired of overly processed fake music. That type of music was once a sub genre that is now THE top 40. With that said, Frank is one of the only mainstream artists doing something more real than 99% of his Urban contemporaries. The artists in the music industry are averaging a D-, while Frank is getting an A-. Frank’s A- is a C- when compared with the classic singers and forefathers of r&b, pop, and blues.

    Luther > Frank Ocean
    Sly Stone > Frank Ocean
    Marvin > Frank Ocean
    Stevie Wonder > Frank Ocean
    Michael Jackson > Frank Ocean
    Teddy Pendagrass > Frank Ocean
Billy Ocean > Frank Ocean (seriously)

Frank Ocean wouldn’t be a lead singer pre-2000. In the end, it’s Frank Ocean’s lack of vocal passion that really makes him fall short.

@cohiba, Completely unfair to compare him to those legends just because his star is rising. In case you’ve not noticed, R&B has evolved. It’s not going to sound like the music of yesteryear or even the past decades, nor should it. If it were to, folks would be screaming how “dated” it become. Many complain that artists are “selling out” for the electropop route, but spend so much time tearing down the new guy you don’t even pause to acknowledge and celebrate his talent.

    [Reply]

    Meme Reply:

@cohiba, Hold on I’m lost. Why the fuk r u comparing legends and pioneers in music to a new artist? That’s the problem with this generation….we could never have legends in this era because ppl u are so quick tear artist down. Let this man become something great and stop ur shit.

    [Reply]

    miles Reply:

@cohiba, Sooooo if Frank Ocean doesn’t meet those standards than that means not a single musician today does. because Frank definantly sings better than most artist

And what are you talking about. Luthor Vandross wasn’t confirmed to be gay until after he died

    [Reply]

    trillafood Reply:

@cohiba, Bitch, shut your hating ass the fuck up. Let Frank be great and stop comparing him to past artists. He’s dope and he’s very very talented.

    jusme Reply:

@cohiba, So you think you made a point with this long drawn out shit? Basically the only thing your saying is that this is a different time period and music has changed so much. Don’t compare Frank to past musicians. This dude will leave a legacy of his own…either enjoy the process or sit back and hate just as you’re doing now…sad!

Everyone that’s complaining about not liking his music are the ones that don’t fully understand what he is saying in his songs. Frank Ocean is far from being a mainstream artist. And let’s not forget he has written(Beyonce- Missing You) and performed with some of the artist that most of you idolize in music today. He’s a talented dude and deserves all the hype he’s getting, hype I’m positive he would have still gotten if he hadn’t admitted he was bi.

But I’m sure all of you naysayers would love him if he was onstage getting naked and humping fans from the audience to hide the fact that his have no substance like Trey and Chris.

  19. cohiba

@Victora What you’re calling innovative, I’m calling boring. He WAS talking through most of that performance.. with the occasional falsetto. If you deny that, then you are simply a fan, and that’s OK.

Most of us don’t check his tumblr, we’re not obsessing over him, so all he has for most of us is his voice and talent. Considering his hype and admiration, it’s not worthy. James brown can say “Please” a hundred times in one song, and make it interesting for 4 minutes. That’s dope, I don’t care what year it is. He drops a 7 minute song called pyramids which he is basically looping 2 different beats and repeating the same melody the whole time with no real progression. That’s weak. Listen to SOS band, they rock it for 8 minutes and flip the beat the whole time.

Amateur, but that’s the new style..

It’s like fashion.. when everything gets too versaced out, grunge comes and shits on it. Then when everyone gets grungy and people are tired of people “not giving a fuck”, people ditch it to go back to hi fashion. It’s in constant change back and forth. My only point to being vocal is to say Frank Ocean represents the backlash to terrible mainstream bullshit… but lets not give it more credit than it deserves, because he’s being graded on the curve.

Here it is you got people saying “dont compare him to legends” why… he’s getting more money, credit, and burn than these artists….. he should live up to it. He sings about coachella for god sake. What if MJ sang about lollapalooza… He wouldn’t because they are making UNIVERSAL music, not personal music documenting every faceted of their life. It’s 2 different leagues. The problem is the dude is getting rushed to the limelight, and he is NOT a lead singer. You get really R&B dudes like me saying something.

@tomeako we GET IT, trust me, we do. We would probably like him less for getting naked and humping his fans, especially if they’re dudes.

Again, if it was 1975, he wouldn’t even be able to come into the studio. We all know this. His biggest strength is being put in juxtaposition with the purposefully placed retarded mainstream acts. If all the great UNDERGROUND artists of today had mainstream gigs (like they should), Frank would NOT stand out like he stands out now. Part of Franks appeal is that he attracts mainstream listeners tired of the overly fake shit on the radio, but he doesn’t impress the people who don’t listen to the radio and are up on their underground game.

@mal he’s not innovative. Innovative is doing something new. What is he doing new? Being himself? Then you’re innovative too.
