New Music: Dawn Richard – ‘Fireflies’

Dawn Richard

With her holiday EP Whiteout now available on iTunes, Dawn Richard shares a bonus track that didn’t make the cut.

On “Fireflies,” the former Dirty Money singer turns sparks into flames as she coos over the seductive burner, which builds into a throbbing dance record.

“Put it up in the air,” commands Dawn, who’s gearing up for the release of her full-length debut GoldenHeart on January 15.

I can’t wait until this dance craze is over and real R&B returns.

@Realistically, Please, Dawn is the future of real R&B. If you actually listen to her material you’d know she doesn’t just follow crazes.

@wadup, but this didn’t make the album !!! So that’s probably why it didn’t. Cause she didn’t want that dance feel. Read the description up top y’all

@Realistically, but this isn’t a dance record. It has a more r&b feel to it. And dawn makes so much diverse music. She can do crossover and r&b !! Her record 86 is r&b perfection. This is just another type of record. Both her EPs ate r&b !! Check en out. Armor On and Whiteout

@Realistically, I bet you do not have a problem listening to pop (Rihanna, Katy Perry etc) and you have a problem with this song? Dawn is killing r&b right now, setting a trend, making it her own. This song should be on the radio, HOT FIYAH!

    SdotB Reply:

@Truth, I like Dawn, but she’s not setting a “trend” if it’s not being played on the radio…I never hear ANYTHING about this chick unless I come to Rap-Up and a select few other blog sites…she needs a better buzz especially since her debut is coming out in January, that’s why they pushed it back the first time…not enough buzz…she needs music on the radio and videos played on TV, not just viral!!

    [Reply]

    KeepingItFunky Reply:

@SdotB, Dawn did NOT push her album back bc it lacked buzz. She got a distribution deal a week before it was supposed to be released, and she would’ve been a FOOL to continue releasing it & pass up an opportunity to have her work sold in stores worldwide.

Yo people KILL me man!!! Here we have someone whose vocals continue to grow, who can write her own damn music, dance her ass off, has a concept that can live on forever & people like you just REFUSE to see talent staring you in the face. “It’s not on the radio.” That’s the problem with you simple-minded drones of this shallow world. Just bc it ain’t on the radio don’t mean it’s not real music. In fact, it’s most likely real if it’s NOT saturated on the waves. Her Armor On EP sold over 30,000 copies (and counting. That’s only HALF of what other MAINSTREAM artists are doing), went #1 on R&B iTunes & charted on billboard. All with NO label, NO budget, NO machine. Just her & 5 other people who believe in her dream. No other duo is doing what Dawn & Drew are doing as far as sound goes. That’s fact. You will deal.

@KeepingItFunky, Just wondering, where did you get the numbers for Armor On. I check Dawn’s wikipedia page occasionally but her sales figures are never listed.

I like it and I think labeling it as a dance record is misleading. Either way, I can still understand why it didn’t make the final cut.

Love this even though it didn’t make the album. This is definitely. More radio friendly but I see why dawn didn’t put it on the album … She is real particular with her sound. It’s crazy that her bonus cuts sound better than most artist albums

Love this. Surprised it didn’t make the album. But I know dawn likes more r&b records so I see why this didn’t make it

Honestly dawn is genius. She can do any type of music. You guys at the top are not reading. This didn’t make the album! But honestly it could have. This isn’t a dance record. The verses are more r&b than anything. It’s just at the break where it does the stutter dance vibe. Which again is a signature of dawns. She always makes a twist with her approach as an r&b artist. As a producer it’s really dope to observe. You can’t class this as dance because it isn’t an upiddy type track like say rihanna or nickis music. It’s more darker. Dawn always puts her spin on a record. This is well written and has so much swag. If rihAnna or Chris did this it would be huge on the radio

This isn’t really a “dance” record though… These comments kill me sometimes. If y’all don’t understand the way a producer composes something you have to find a box to put it in. -_- the struggle. Anyway this song is dope but I can tell it’s not finished and I see why it didn’t make the cut. She’s knows her brand and the type of music she wants to put out so, it’s not surprising this one didn’t make the cut. But I will say this. Why is it that all the songs she releases for free (creatively) KIIIIIIILL all these other “major” artists??? I love Dawn and I am SO in for her solo career, but I think she’d make an ASSLOAD of money if she started writing for other artists in addition to doing her solo stuff! Not that I want her to stop releasing because I LOVE and own everything she’s released since DK but I want her to add “songwriter” to her resume as well.

@georgia23, Dawn is already writing for other artists. 5 steps ahead of us ; )

I heard dawn wrote this for another artist. Wasn’t even supposed to be her record. I heard she wrote it for some other artist a longtime ago.

Ok now i know im not the only one who caught that “We Found Love” Beat rip off. That shit sounded hilarious.

    Do better Reply:

@Real Talk, please!!! Y’all have to stop comparing artist!!! It must stop! The hate is so real! I mean lets go down the Line. Love and war by Tamar Braxton. In number one on r&b iTunes with a song that sounds like trust and believe by Keyshia cole. Bruno mars song lose you baby sounds like Adele’s. chasing pavements. Rihanna whole album sounds like Chris browns fortune. And bandz Pour it up is blatantly bandz copied. So I honestly don’t understand how y’all say dumb stuff like above when this has been the formula throughout time. Producers take all the time and it honestly explained why she didn’t go with the record
