Big Sean is giving back in a big way. The G.O.O.D. Music rapper took over Detroit high school Bates Academy as “Celebrity Principal for a Day” on Thursday. He helped recognize students for improving their attendance and winning Get Schooled and Viacom’s Detroit Attendance Challenge.

“It’s just cool to come back and just see the kids so excited and it all be for a good cause,” said Sean, who graduated high school with a 3.6 GPA.

The students greeted the “Beware” hitmaker with signs and a special cheer as he arrived with his mother Myra and gave out hugs.

He freestyled for them and shared some advice during a Q&A with MTV’s Sway. “The best way to study is with your homies,” he said. “If you got some dumb friends, don’t study with them.”

This is the second time Sean has served as “Principal for a Day.” He previously surprised students at Lincoln High School in 2012.
