New Music: DJ Premier & Miguel - '2 Lovin U'

  /  02.21.2017

Nearly two years after dropping “damned” on 2015’s Wildheart, Miguel unleashes an alternate version of the track now titled “2 Lovin U,” produced by the legendary DJ Premier.

Favoring funky sounds and Preemo’s trademark scratches over industrial darkness, this version is said to be the original. It was first teased back when Miguel started working on his third studio album, which went on to feature “waves” and “coffee.”

“The snippet you heard on Miguel’s Instagram, mine is the original,” Premier said in a statement. “Miguel and I were vibing at a session and just really seeing what we could come up with. What we came up with was a dope, but rough version of what you hear today.”

Unfortunately, the duo faced roadblocks along the way and weren’t able to release it until now. “Miguel and I had deadlines and we never got around to finishing it,” he added. “We both really believed in this version of the track and we both felt very strongly that it needed to come out and be released as a single. Miguel and I approached the label about releasing it and everyone was on-board.”

The track, which features Miguel’s “damned” lyrics, is actually the first release from Premier’s new label, TTT (To the Top), and it comes after being teased on ESPN’s “First Take” and “SportsCenter” on Valentine’s Day.

But that’s not all for the Preemo and Miguel connection. “The track having a different title gives it a new light,” Premier added. “Wait until you see the video!”

In addition to music, Premier is venturing into television. The Gang Starr beatsmith is scoring and executive producing VH1’s “The Breaks,” which premiered last night.

Listen to the funky, hip-hop-infused version of “damned,” now titled “2 Lovin U,” below.
