New Music: M.I.A. - 'OLA' + 'Foreign Friend'

  /  03.17.2016

M.I.A. is breaking boundaries. The rapper, who released the powerful “Borders” visual in November, carries that message on her latest two-part song, “OLA” and “Foreign Friend.”

The cover art, a photograph of people climbing a tall fence, leads into the cut’s lyrics. “At the border, I see the patroller, cruising past in their car,” she rhymes. “Grippin’ in my socks and slippers, Mexicans say ‘hola.'”

Before the song breaks into its second part — which features a minute-long beat shift — M.I.A. drives her point home yet again. “Most of the things I do, they banned it,” she rhymes. “But I’ma still do it. I’m a bandit.”

The song appears to feature a chopped-up Lion King sample that M.I.A. seems to think might get it shut down by Disney. “pirates,” she tweeted. “throw that shit on dj sites WORLDWIDE no borders – b 4 Disney shut it down!”

“OLA” follows yesterday’s premiere of “Temple,” which she co-crafted with Baauer and G-Dragon. It’s the latest single off Baauer’s upcoming album Aa.
