Donald Glover Cast in Han Solo 'Star Wars' Film

  /  10.21.2016

The force is strong with Donald Glover. The actor-turned-rapper, who also goes by Childish Gambino, has just joined the cast of the highly-anticipated Han Solo film, playing the role of Lando Calrissian.

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller gushed about the “Atlanta” star.

“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” they said. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

According to StarWars.com, the upcoming movie is still untitled and will feature Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo.

Glover fought for the role against Straight Outta Compton stars O’Shea Jackson and Jason Mitchell as well as “The Get Down’s” Yahya Abdul-Mateen, as per Variety.

Gambino’s role behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera for “Atlanta” will reportedly not be compromised by his role in the film, though accommodations are being made to the series’ schedule as its second season gets underway.

Calrissian was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The new Solo film is set to take place before The Empire Strikes Back and is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2018.

Glover, meanwhile, is having a great year. He organized the Pharos experience in Joshua Tree, Calif., received critical acclaim for “Atlanta,” finished filming “Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ and welcomed his first child.
