Video: Vali - 'Ain't No Friend of Mine'

  /  02.01.2017

At a time when discrimination and racism plague worldwide headlines, Rostrum Records singer Vali delivers a politically-charged, socially-conscious music video for her new single “Ain’t No Friend of Mine.”

The dance-filled visual blends choreography with symbolic imagery to share an important message of empowerment against hate. “All the petty shit, we shall overcome,” sings Vali. Later, she adds: “Why you wanna throw shade when I’m trying to shine?”

Starting off in black-and-white scenes, the Grizz Lee-directed clip carries on and features splashes of color. Spliced between choreographed dance moves, a KKK piñata is shown before it’s bashed by baseball bats.

In the midst of these uncertain times, the New York City-born songstress hopes to spread positivity. “Having grown up surrounded by diversity, I’ve never seen color or the labels society projects on groups of people,” Vali tells Rap-Up. “For me, it’s always been about seeing and spreading love, while knowing that hate exists. Through my music, I want to inspire individuals from all over the world to choose LOVE; knowing how powerful we are as people and that hate is learned.”

“Ain’t No Friend of Mine,” the first single from Vali’s upcoming EP, marks a new era for Vali, who is now being managed by famed choreographer/creative director Laurieann Gibson, who’s worked with Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and Diddy in the past.
