Childish Gambino Says He's Not Retiring Yet

  /  08.09.2017

Childish Gambino isn’t calling it quits just yet.

Donald Glover may have announced the pending retirement of his rap name in June, but in an interview with BBC Radio 1, the multifaceted artist says he is readying new material.

“I’ve been working on [new music] here,” he explained. “You guys have been very instrumental in my music. So I’m very happy about that. London has been very inspirational.”

Much to the delight of Glover’s music fans, he added: “You still have a lot more time of calling me [Childish Gambino], if you want.”

In June, Glover told the Governors Ball crowd that he would be finalizing his work as Childish with his next project. “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album,” he said.

Afterwards, he elaborated on his plans during an interview with HuffPost. “There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?'” he said. “Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk. Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

Outside of music, Glover is also working on The Lion King, a Star Wars spin-off, and the second season of “Atlanta,” among other projects. No word yet on when the next Gambino project is due.

Currently, “Redbone” is sitting at No. 12 on the Hot 100, while Gambino’s latest album Awaken, My Love! hangs strong at No. 44.
