10 Questions for Dorrough

Dorrough

For years, Southern hip-hop has dominated the dance floors with its catchy hooks and thunderous bass lines. Texas rapper Dorrough used this recipe while making his infectious hit, “Walk That Walk,” which recently held the title of being the most played video on BET.

Dorrough, a former high school basketball standout, knew he was destined to score in the music business. “When we used to come out of the locker room for high school games, my song would be playing over the loud speakers and the crowd used to get hyped,” he says. “That’s when I knew what I wanted to do with my life.”

The “Ice Cream Paint Job” hitmaker, who will release his debut album Dorrough Music on August 4, slowed his Southern drawl for a few to discuss his wildest tour moments, how he seeks inspiration, and how he got that silly nickname.

1. How did you get the name Mr. Yeah Buddy?
I got that nickname from my first single, “Ice Cream Paint Job.” I said it on the track, next thing I know everyone in Dallas is calling Mr. Yeah Buddy. It just stuck like fly paper.

2. What inspires you to make music?
Texas has to be my biggest inspiration to make music. Next has to be my family. Not a lot of artists have full support from their loved ones. I am blessed to have that support.

3. What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done at a concert?
Girls are by far the craziest at concerts. One time, two girls jumped on stage to dance. They weren’t causing any trouble so security let them be. Eventually, they made their way over to my side of the stage and proceeded to grab my belt buckle and try to pull my pants off. Let’s just say the bouncers hopped in before they had my pants.

4. Which three females in the entertainment industry would you want to see “walk that walk”?
Lauren London, of course Halle Berry, and Amerie.

5. What do you like to do when you’re not writing in your rhyme book?
Honestly, for me, there isn’t a moment that goes by when I’m not in my rhyme book. I could be at the movies, lunch, the mall, anywhere. If a hook or a punchline comes to me, I have to write it down. But I used to hoop in high school, that’s still a serious passion.

6. LeBron or Kobe?
Since I’m a huge basketball fan, I would want them both on my team. If I had to choose one, it would have to be LeBron because he’s young and is on Jordan’s heels when it comes to records.

7. One item you never travel without?
Money. And I always carry as much stuff in my pockets as I can.

8. What was the last movie you saw in the theater?
Jason X

9. Do you have a ritual you do before heading into the booth?
Nah, I don’t have any special ritual. I just need a dope producer and a bottle of vitaminwater and I’m good.

10. What’s your favorite Texan cuisine?
Rudy’s. If you’re ever in Dallas, hit up Rudy’s. It will be the best chicken you’ve ever had.
