After finally obtaining a visa to return to the U.S., M.I.A.’s first stop was the Costume Institute’s “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday (May 3). The “Born Free” singer arrived on the arm of designer Alexander Wang, wearing his gold and black creation.

The fashion and entertainment worlds collided at the star-studded event, which attracted the likes of Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Diddy, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell, Cassie, and a glowing Katy Perry. Lady Gaga entertained the chic crowd. 12 photos below.
