Kendrick Lamar declared himself the “king of New York” on his “Control” verse. But the comment didn’t sit well with many of his New York peers including A$AP Rocky.

“That king of New York shit, you smoking crack. You crazy,” said the Harlem rapper during his appearance on Funkmaster Flex’s show on Hot 97.

However, unlike Joell Ortiz, Papoose, Joe Budden, or Astro, Rocky was one of the New York MCs mentioned by Kendrick on “Control.”

“Honestly, K. Dot and them ni**as, that’s fam. I think hip-hop needs this shit,” said Rocky. “It’s ni**as pissed off just because they wasn’t mentioned. I’m not justifying shit, rap is rap. The ni**a didn’t say nothing about nobody mother, he ain’t want problems. He said these is my ni**as and I’m lettin’ ya’ll know it’s competition. What’s the problem? That man know I’m where he at.”

While the song has incited several fiery responses, A$AP think it’s good for hip-hop. “All the rappers who are making disses and responses, it’s just like, yo… It’s not about being relevant or not because hip-hop ain’t about relevance, man, it’s all about the sport, it’s all about the culture,” he said. “I don’t care if a motherfucker got a hit record or not. I feel like some people are goin’ extra hard and if that’s how they feel, I feel like that’s something that K. Dot gotta handle himself. I’m talking about the rappers that was named, I feel like they shouldn’t feel no type of way.”

But he still doesn’t agree with K-Dot’s “king of New York” comment. “I got a crib in L.A. I’m doing the same venues, if not bigger venues. I don’t feel no type of way,” said Rocky. “I’m not gonna say I’m the king of L.A. I could, at least I live there.”

He did, however, applaud Kendrick for his verse. “But that ni**a’s spittin’. I feel like that ni**a’s one of the most talented of our generation. I ain’t got nothing but love for my whole TDE fam.”
