Watch G-Eazy's 'These Things Happened' Documentary

  /  03.20.2018

G-Eazy takes a stroll down memory lane in These Things Happened, a new documentary available exclusively through YouTube. The introspective 14-minute film blends footage from Young Gerald’s early years with more recent clips. It also offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on life as the Oakland-based MC.

“My approach to music has always been autobiographical,” he explains. “What I’m experiencing right now, where my head is at, that’s what makes it into the music…If I’m low as fuck, going through it, questioning everything, feeling inadequate, dealing with something, that’s what I put into the music.”

The Rob Semmer-directed clip also focuses on YouTube’s role in his success. “It didn’t work the traditional route until I got it poppin’ on my own on YouTube,” he says in the clip. “I’m forever grateful of the opportunity that presented to an artist like myself without the resources of a major label.”

Additionally, a full-circle moment ties the documentary together. The movie begins with an old video of Young Gerald in Times Square. “One day, we’ll have a stupidly big ad in Times Square,” he says. Finally, the clip ends with G-Eazy staring at his new YouTube-sponsored ad in Times Square.

“YouTube Music has set a goal of giving artists the best direct access to their fans across any other platform,” said Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s Global Head of Music. “Our Artist Spotlight Stories are a perfect example of how artists can share personal and intimate stories with fans, and we’re thrilled to be teaming up with G-Eazy to tell his story.”

G-Eazy also added: “It’s the age of access. YouTube provides a peek into your life, into your world, into your process. You close that window for too long and you run the risk of losing your audience.”

Up next, G-Eazy is headed on “The Endless Summer Tour” with Lil Uzi Vert and Ty Dolla $ign, which will run from July 20 in Auburn through Sept. 8 in West Palm Beach.
