Rap-Up.com || New Music: Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks unveils her latest work of art, “Van Vogue.” The hip-hop-meets-dance record is one of four tracks featured on the fiesty rapper’s EP 1991, which has already been released overseas. It will hit digital retailers in the U.S. on Tuesday and store shelves on June 12.

Banks, who turns 21 on Thursday, will perform at Hot 97 Summer Jam on June 3 and her inaugural Mermaid Ball later in the day. Work it, girl!

Does Azealia Banks remind ANYONE of KID SISTER!!?? Not saying it’s a bad thing, but Banks’ new stuff is so reminiscent of Kid Sister’s material that was on her mixtapes back in 07′/08′ and her debut album “Ultraviolet.” Not to mention, they both have spunky personalities and most importantly they both like to HAVE FUN!!! It’s sad though to think that nobody probably knows who Kid Sister is.

I’m starting to like Azealia Banks though and her true lyrical skill is internal rhyming and her ability to play with words. It’s a lot similar to Snoop Dogg’s lyricism. Haha. I can’t stand though when people feel like they have to bash Nicki Minaj every time new female is trying to get hot! Nicki’s verse on Kanye West’s Monster alone is lightyears beyond anything that I’ve heard from Azealia so far.

She has a lot of work to do to get close to Nicki’s skill and ability. People like to insult Nicki and throw her name threw the mud, but they need to remember she’s the same one who got on a track full of hip hop royalty and decimated everyone. She’s proved herself. Now it’s Azealia’s turn.

@Jasmine, Nicki Minaj still has bars now though and if you don’t believe me you haven’t heard her new album. Come On A Cone, I Am Your Leader, and HOV Lane are all lyrically superior to anything Azealia Banks has out right now. Heck, even Beez in the Trap is lyrically superior to some of the stuff Banks has out and that song is the equivalent of lyrical vomit.

The reason I’m bringing up her Monster verse is because that’s easily one of Minaj’s best and most critically acclaimed verses to date. The only thing that Banks has over Minaj is her sound, however with Nicki’s rap/pop crossover success she has a lot of leeway to adapt her sound appropriately.

Now I like Banks, but the truth is that she has a lot of work to do to catch up to Minaj. Whether she “sweeps her spot from right under her with no mercy”, only time will tell. If Minaj never sells another single, win a Grammy, and her next album flops she will have made a significant milestone in female rap. It’s exactly why every upcoming female rapper gets compared to her, even if their sounds are glaringly different like Banks’s.

Now, that’s real.
