New Music: Azealia Banks – ‘Van Vogue’

Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks unveils her latest work of art, “Van Vogue.” The hip-hop-meets-dance record is one of four tracks featured on the fiesty rapper’s EP 1991, which has already been released overseas. It will hit digital retailers in the U.S. on Tuesday and store shelves on June 12.

Banks, who turns 21 on Thursday, will perform at Hot 97 Summer Jam on June 3 and her inaugural Mermaid Ball later in the day. Work it, girl!

i just don’t understand these comments about how “this wont be mainstream”. why does all music have to be mainstream? i’m quite sure azealia is not looking to play to the same audience as minaj. she’s making progressive music that you either like or dont.. i don’t think she’s looking to break z100. you can’t deny her talent though.

    [Reply]

    OpD2 Reply:

@212, are you serious, please look at your comment again, you think AB want to be some underground artist forever, she wants her music to reach the world, fame a fortune and all that, and to do so is to go mainstream, you talking about progressive music,so how is her progressive music as you call it,is going to progress if it don’t go mainstream, you are not making any sense.

Does Azealia Banks remind ANYONE of KID SISTER!!?? Not saying it’s a bad thing, but Banks’ new stuff is so reminiscent of Kid Sister’s material that was on her mixtapes back in 07′/08′ and her debut album “Ultraviolet.” Not to mention, they both have spunky personalities and most importantly they both like to HAVE FUN!!! It’s sad though to think that nobody probably knows who Kid Sister is.

    W. Rose Reply:

@GIRL, Guuuurrrrllll! LOL. I’m cracking the f-k up over here at what you said. Haha.

I’m starting to like Azealia Banks though and her true lyrical skill is internal rhyming and her ability to play with words. It’s a lot similar to Snoop Dogg’s lyricism. Haha. I can’t stand though when people feel like they have to bash Nicki Minaj every time new female is trying to get hot! Nicki’s verse on Kanye West’s Monster alone is lightyears beyond anything that I’ve heard from Azealia so far.

She has a lot of work to do to get close to Nicki’s skill and ability. People like to insult Nicki and throw her name threw the mud, but they need to remember she’s the same one who got on a track full of hip hop royalty and decimated everyone. She’s proved herself. Now it’s Azealia’s turn.

    [Reply]

    Jasmine Reply:

@W. Rose, You know what I take funny? You guys always bring up that ONE verse……from 2010-11. I can’t front…..chick had bars for days in 07′ and 10′. But you can’t kiss ass and say her bars are on point today because they aren’t. As far as beef, she had it coming. She dissed ALL the female MC’s, then smiled in their face trying to act innocent. Smh. She’s corny and if she keeps being cocky and fake, that spot y’all “swear” she has……will be swept from right under her with no mercy. That’s real.

    [Reply]

    W. Rose Reply:

@Jasmine, Nicki Minaj still has bars now though and if you don’t believe me you haven’t heard her new album. Come On A Cone, I Am Your Leader, and HOV Lane are all lyrically superior to anything Azealia Banks has out right now. Heck, even Beez in the Trap is lyrically superior to some of the stuff Banks has out and that song is the equivalent of lyrical vomit.

The reason I’m bringing up her Monster verse is because that’s easily one of Minaj’s best and most critically acclaimed verses to date. The only thing that Banks has over Minaj is her sound, however with Nicki’s rap/pop crossover success she has a lot of leeway to adapt her sound appropriately.

Now I like Banks, but the truth is that she has a lot of work to do to catch up to Minaj. Whether she “sweeps her spot from right under her with no mercy”, only time will tell. If Minaj never sells another single, win a Grammy, and her next album flops she will have made a significant milestone in female rap. It’s exactly why every upcoming female rapper gets compared to her, even if their sounds are glaringly different like Banks’s.

    Now, that’s real.

    [Reply]

    Bridget Reply:

@W. Rose, Banks hasn’t been out as long as Minaj and she’s already touring. They shouldn’t be compared yet. Minaj could’ve did better with the album, I heard it and very happy I didn’t spend a penny. All the promo Minaj has done and she’s still not Gold. Being ungrateful and cocky will do it to you. THAT’S real.

    W. Rose Reply:

@W. Rose, Since I can’t reply to Bridget’s comment, I’ll just reply to my own.

If you actually paid attention to the first response I made to this post, you’ll see that I said exactly what you’re talking about in your post.

Also, Nicki scanned Gold two weeks ago.

You need to pay attention honey.

The thing is, she’s bringing vigor to a genre that tends to be static with respect to new sounds. Of course, the elements she uses have been staples of underground music for quite sometime. Honestly, I think she brings a sense of cosmopolitan culture to Hip-Hop.

She’s not talking about Nicki Minaj. It sounds like she’s talkin about a friend of hers. Look homegirl said that the chick goes to whole foods now and is a student at NYU. When was Nicki Minaj ever at nyu? I think the part about the bum bitches make people think about Nicki, but Nicki never said hung out w/ white dudes or was a poli-sci freshman. it sounds more personal.and Iggy azalea? Isn’t she from Australia? How would AB know nething about her really?
