« Kanye West and Kim Kardashian Ride a Roller Coaster at Six FlagsOdd Future Announces ‘Camp Flog Gnaw’ Tour, Solo Projects »Frank Ocean Debuts at No. 2 with ‘channel ORANGE’![]() Frank Ocean is making big waves on the charts with channel ORANGE. The Odd Future singer’s major-label debut put up impressive numbers to enter at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
ORANGE, the follow-up to 2011’s Nostalgia, Ultra, sold 131,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard. The majority of sales were digital, with only 3,000 coming from physical CDs. The album was released as an iTunes exclusive a week in advance of its scheduled July 17 date. Following its digital release, physical retailers were told to start selling the CD as soon as it arrived in stores. Target, however, refused to carry ORANGE as a result of the early iTunes release. Ocean trumps the first-week sales of Usher’s Looking 4 Myself (128,000) and comes close to Chris Brown’s Fortune (135,000). The latter, which opened at No. 1 last week, falls to No. 4 with 45,000 sold in its second week. TweetYou can leave a response, or trackback from your own site. 51 CommentsLeave a Reply

@Replay, you are right. He will leave with this burden his whole life.
He will always wwonder if people like him because of his talent or because people feel sorry for him.
Playing the victim for sympathy is double-edged sword, he will learn it the hard way.
If you have confidence in your talent you will let your talent speak for you. People who wanna sell their private life always end up in bad situation and depression. Look at britney, michael, rihanna, chris brown. Hope he is enjoying his 15 min of fame tho.

lmao Def Jam probably bought half of those copies.
Still waiting for a #1 album and a radio hit. Otherwise I’ll stay conviced that Def Jam bought 50 000 copies of their “Itunes Exclusive”.
How could this nobody sell more digital copies than Justin Bieber, the biggest digital act? Very suspect in my opinion.
This guy is a fraud:
-he can’t sing
-stole the channel orange concept from Devonté Hynes aka BLOOD ORANGE, even his album cover cover is a rip off of Devonté’s single covers
-He lied He is dating a girl named Alycia Bellamy, Chris brown’s ex girlfriend
He said it himself on twitter he is trolling the industry and everybody is jumping on this fraud bandwagon but I ain’t buying it.

@He is trolling the industry, I’m not trying to argue with you but I will say that Frank has NEVER said he was gay but he has said he was bisexual months before he released his album thank you notes (letter) but people never paid any attention to it until the music critics noticed that he was singing about his past relationship & was being very open & honest about his past : )

@Replay, its sad but very true. I think he strategically announced his situation to build some buzz. He is a student of Kanye, and we’ve seen that guy always strategically build some buzz around his album release, negative or positive. He is very talented and should have just let the music speak, but guess it worked for him.

Nice job, glad he sold that much because he has amazing talent but to all of you that get mad whenever someone says he did those numbers because of the “coming out letter”, deal with it, it’s true. He deserved the numbers without the whole letter thing but he would sell much less without it.

Although the coming out letter could have been something he did to create more of a buzz this album was still highly anticipated..I think the letter more of a foretelling of the album.Listen to the lyrics of most of the songs on the album..He says “him, boy” a lot in the lyrics!I think it was more so to “warn” people that “hey,I’m gonna be a little different so please be aware.” Although he did do good please believe he lost fans too with the letter!Im still a fan though.

I remember before J. Cole’s debut came out, people were yelling, “This nigga will be lucky enough to sell 50K.” Well, Cole World sold ~217K in the first week and the haters were shocked, yelling “Jay brought the albums” as a defense. Cole did that without the promotion that some rappers have — the fanbase that supported him through The Come Up, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights came through when it mattered the most. In the case of Frank Ocean, now, letter of admission or not — people have been salivating for Frank’s debut ever since nostalgia, ULTRA. He has homophobic fans who don’t ride with him anymore. He has loyal fans who’ll support him no matter what. He has new fans, in the wake of this announcement, that have discovered his music and support meaningful productions. Y’all kill me with these little conspiracy theories. While you are sitting here constructing flawed philosophies and hating, Frank is moving on with his damn life. Ironic, really. I have the album … I love it … he’ll snag a Grammy nomination for sure!

You can’t compare Chris Brown and Frank Ocean’s music, it’s not fair. Frank Ocean’s music is in a completely different level in terms of artistry and sophistication, it is more alternative, more raw R&B. Chris Brown is more pop, as far as I’ve heard some of his songs are strongly influenced by this eurodance-pop sound trend which is going on at the moment.

I think he is very taleneted and would have sold a lot of records slowly over the next year and would have been considered one of the most overlooked albums of the year. I do believe that it helped is out of the box sells but the kid is being honest unlike a lot of these fake azz dudes in the indusrty. I’m not one that condones men being gay, I was raised and taught for years and believed for years its wrong but then you grow up mature and relize its not my place to judge but I believe he is telling a lot of these kids stories out there. many young teenage boys are comitting suicde behind being scared to be exposed for their life style. while I’m still one not to approve of gay acts’ and it’s my spiritual morals that can’t accept it. I think he was brave and could help some of these lost kids. at least he is honest and open and the kid is a star extremely talented artist and a gifted songwriter. hope it’s not a stunt for pub. let the music speeak for itself… shit everyone Loves Prince, and he is a super queer!
