Willow Smith Talks Confidence, Haters, and New Sound

Willow Smith

Willow Smith has been scrutinized, whether it’s for her hair color, pierced tongue, or fashion choices. But the “Whip My Hair” singer doesn’t care what anyone says. Armed with a newfound confidence, Will and Jada’s 11-year-old daughter opened up about her style, dealing with haters, and her new musical direction.

“When I first got into the entertainment industry, I would always watch Rihanna and all those people, so I was like, ‘Ooh, I have to be this,’” she told Michael Yo for Yahoo!’s “The Yo Show.” “So my mom was like, ‘Just be yourself.’ Just two months ago, I kinda gained confidence. I can make my entertainment thing go wherever I want it to go.”

While her dog Abby inspires her hair color choices, her wardrobe is influenced by what’s on her iPod. “It’s kinda on the edgy side, but my style kinda comes from the music I listen to,” explained Willow.

She has had to deal with her share of haters on the Internet. “I send love and positive energy to all those people in their lives,” said Willow. “I hope that they find where they’re meant to be and all that stuff, but it’s kinda like, don’t come here with that.”

Earlier this month, she explored a new direction with the video for her ballad “I Am Me,” written by Sia. “I was kinda more into the ballady stuff ’cause when you sing ballads, people can see more of your voice and I like that,” said Willow, whose Roc Nation debut is still awaiting a release date.

@Josh, You would think a child would have no hater. But she does have alot. and they are very respectful and hateful. Some are very crude as well. It astounds me when I read the things ppl say to and about an 11yr old child.

@Tami, I mean the way she is talking…if an 11 year old started talking to me about positive energy I would laugh at them. She sounds scripted

That child does have serious hater tho.. Lol the comments people make about her because she cut her hair and ish. I ain’t never seen grown folks hate on a kid as much as Willow. So she does make a point ! Which is exactly what her song is about. She’s very well spoken and mature. Kuduos to Will&Jada!

Yeah, this little girl does have haters and they all tend to be adults which is SAD! She is so intelligent and fearless for such a young age. Will and Jada should be proud.

I bet in a few years she will regret getting into this business as early as she did. If you think about it, she is already struggling. People don’t take her seriously and are super critical of her. She should have just lived out her childhood and waited until she was at least 18 to get into it.

I like her piercing and that nice outfit she has on. That hat is very sweet looking too and just adds to her charms. Why anyone would hate her is beyond me. Out of boredom maybe? Or unemployment?

Who cares about her hair? I’m hating on the fact that she’s a spoiled brat whose powerful industry parents purchased her career and way too much autotune. She can not be compared to JoJo and Michael Jackson who actually had talent. She’s basically no different that Paris Hilton – an over privileged princess whose mommy and daddy purchased a top 10 single… I mean come on. A SIA single? Most kids just want a bike or an Ipod.
