JoJo digs deep and bares her soul on her moody new mixtape Agápē, named after her adopted puppy, who appears on the cover art. Comprised of 13 tracks, the follow-up to her 2010 tape Can’t Take That Away From Me includes the singles “We Get By” and the André 3000-inspired “André.”
“This mixtape is meant to be experienced when you have 27-28 minutes to go on a little journey with me and listen to some stories,” said JoJo. “There are interludes, outerludes, random shit, my dad playing harmonica, and a conversation between my whole family at Thanksgiving.”
The project doesn’t officially drop until Thursday, but you can stream the “labor of love” in its entirety now.
UPDATE: You can now download Agápē at the link below.

Billions and Thinking Out Loud are AMAZING! It’s so annoying how she’s so underrated. She needs to get with a better label.

I didn’t like it.
Great vocals/production, but the lyrics are obnoxious. Either she’s whining about how much being famous sucks or she’s making non-stop references to being a drunk/pothead, both of which come off as being very, very try-hard and overcompensating for her “child star” image. I like JoJo and I think she’s capable of greatness, but this isn’t it.

I agree completely. Every single song has an alcohol reference/weed/or cursing…. I expressed the exact same thoughts to her, and the interludes were so random, and doing way toooooooooooooo much……….. I think she tried to do a Fran k Ocean thing and failed.

Vocally, she’s really killing a great deal of the people out now and this is a mixtape…

Not her best work. Was expecting something with more quality. The mixes sound off, and the lyrics and concepts are redundant. She’s incredibly talented, but instead of singing about constantly getting high, or how awful fame is, sing about what’s really going on with your record deal & album. I’m a stan, but I’m disappointed in Agape :(

@B Rocka, Also, if you were a stan you would know she explained countless times on twitter about her record deal. And I quote JoJo:
JoJo @JoJoistheway
@musicman128 7 albums. No time limit. Ratified in the state of NY (more lenient child laws then CA). Toni sued and got out of her contract

@JoArmy, Wait .. JoJo has stans now? Wow. Also, it’s not a good look to be proud of “stanning” for someone that doesn’t even know you’re alive.

this was 80% background chatter/interludes. the actual songs were mediocre. very disappointing
[Reply]
December 18th, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Okay, so the majority of us agree this wasn’t her best work because the interludes was one thing just thrown in there, and content wise, she’s always talking about being high/drunk/having sex, etc., as if she has nothing better to do. She’s not complaining about “how being famous sucks” but subliminally addressing her label drama. It’s a decent mixtape w/o the interludes imo. Just needs a few more listens..

okay, so we all admit this isn’t her best work because she’s prob busy singing about being high/drunk/having sex and this comes off as “trying hard” but at the same time she’s not complaining about fame, she’s subliminally talking about her label drama. It’s a decent tape after a couple listens.

People that don’t know anything ask for too much! It’s a F*cking Mixtape & the point of an mix tape is to show the direction an artist wants to go in, that’s all! Y’all be wanting this and that like its the official LP. Relax. BY the way; I enjoyed it.

@SantaBey, music is music. Mixtape is not synonymous with mediocre. By any standards this fell short. No excuses. I’m not even saying its terrible but there is still a standard to be met.

@ricky, you are absolutely wrong with that statement guy. If a mixtape wasn’t different from another body of work, like perhaps an “album”, there’d be no point in calling one body of work a mixtape while calling another an album. And for a MIXTAPE, what more did you expect? Album, 2 years. Mixtape, 2 months max…big difference on the outcome.

Love JoJo but I’m not feeling this at all. I feel like she’s trying to be like Frank Ocean a little too much. Andre & Can’t Handle the Truth sound good though. Not feeling her new look either w all the hats and the harsh make up. I like the long dak hair! JoJo go back to a few months ago. I was digging those vibes girl!

@TrinaFan, Uh, in what way was she “trying to be Frank Ocean?”
The genres she uses in this mixtape are pop, neo-soul, hip hop and RnB. Musically it’s absolutely nothing like him. As for the interludes, if people think Frank Ocean is the first artist to use interludes, y’all need to perhaps listen to some older music. Like, pronto.
She already explained that she would be throwing in random bits of herself in the interludes. The mixtape is all about her and she’s doing it for herself and the short clips of herself in the studio, her heritage (St. Patricks Day), her dad etc reflect that. Also most of them are humorous clips and give the mixtape a less serious feel. There isn’t some deep inner meaning that people are supposed to uncover. Jeeez.

I like the sound of this mix tape. The sound is easy to vibe to, and Andre is a random moment of hotness on this mix tape. Given it is different to hear this “child star” talk about sex, drugs and alcohol. However, it is important that she does this to shed the image she once had. I like the direction she is going in and I would by this mix tape if it was sold on iTunes. This is music our generation should be listening to in my opinion.

I love that she wanted to give us a personal vibe with all the interludes… but we could’ve still gotten that vibe with three less of said interludes. Juuuuuust saying. Other than that I am a HUGE Jojo fan and this mixtape does not disappoint, all the tracks are dope. I especially love White Girl in Paris, Billions and Can’t Handle The Truth.

I really HATE songs that are soooo short. Wayyyy too many songs under 3 minutes. The full songs sound soooo good. I didn’t even listen to the interludes I don’t like them on cds. I’m a little sad cause this wasn’t what I expected. To me there’s only 5 songs and 2 already know. the other 3 was good… like a vibe feel I like them… just wished all 13 tracks was actually songs…and the actually songs don’t sound like drinking/smoking in them… sound normal to me…cursing not a factor:D

Before people start saying, FRANK OCEAN!!! Think about what R&B has become over the last decade. Now is one of the most experimental times for R&B where artists can really play around with lyrics, raw experimental instrumentals, etc. No generic 90s-2000s R&B lyrics. JoJo’s evolving damnit! She’s baring her soul here, which is something an artist should be doing.
