Kanye West Rants About Grammys, Fashion Line, & Lady Gaga Tour at Revel Show

Kanye West

What would a Kanye West show be without a rant? After debuting his designer masks on Friday, Mr. West was back to his old self during his second of three shows at Revel in Atlantic City.

While performing “Clique,” he went on a tangent about the media (“They’ll try to tell you Kanye’s so crazy, so deranged… I ain’t crazy, I’m just not satisfied”), the criticism he received for his women’s fashion line, and being snubbed in major categories by the Grammys.

“I love Maroon 5, but when I lost for Best New Artist to Maroon 5… Or when Watch the Throne and Dark Fantasy, neither of them got nominated for Album of the Year, or when “Ni**as in Paris” didn’t get nominated for Record of the Year… So don’t expect to see me at the Grammys this year, you nah mean?!” yelled Yeezy, who was nominated for six awards at the 2013 Grammys.

He also addressed his ill-fated tour with Lady Gaga, death threats from people on Twitter, and his plans for the future.

“I will die for what’s in my heart,” a passionate ‘Ye told the crowd.

Hear him speak from the heart.

@Redchainsaw, LOL wtf? The stuff he’s saying are true. MBDTF should have won album of the year, it was honestly pure art. It’s not about how many Grammys he gets; he puts so much into his works and deserves to acknowledged for it..

@wadup, are you saying that other artists don’t put their heart and soul into their music? every single nominee has put everything into their music and arrived at masterpieces. i think kanye’s music is better too, but that’s just my opinion which i’m not going to push onto others, and you should do the same.
kanye is my favorite artist of all time but i’m not going to lie to myself, this guy is a douche.

@XO till we overdose…, i completely agree with you on him being a douche and i’m one of the biggest kanye fan out there; i have no problem admitting that another artists’ creativity or them creating master pieces; not trying to push my opinion on others, but in all honesty MBDTF is genius, even people who don’t like/listen to rap agree on that; and the grammys are turning into a complete joke, i mean nominating “call me maybe” seriously?

He is right though. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy should have been nominated and it should have won the album of the year.

@Miszi, Absolutely. Most reviews were a perfect 10 or 9.5. The album is brilliant.

He made the mistake of bringing out Watch the Throne too soon afterwards. He shoulda let MBDTW marinate.

I don’t know if it’s the fact that he is “not satisfied,” I think it’s more so that he’s ungrateful. He should just be appreciative for everything that he has achieved and stop worrying so much about winning awards. He’s bitching about losing Best New Artist to Maroon 5, but if you look at the charts Maroon 5 is still kicking and releasing hits and doing sold out shows. I’m not a fan but I just don’t know where he’s going with that.

    [Reply]

    Nikki Reply:

@Kyle, A negative person sees it as him being ungrateful, an artistic person or an industry person knows exactly what he is talking about, why should he be satisfied if he thinks that there are greater things to be done, that is how artist think, that there is more, it can be better, it should be appreciated. It all depends on your life outlook. I don’t think it’s about greed or money with him. I think Kanye would still make music or design if he was broke.

Kanye West and Chris Brown are most probably the sickest (in a bad way) two individuals out there. Always finding something new to complain about instead of doing something useful. I can’t stand both for their absolutely conceited manners. I never commented on anything, but this is ridiculous. Something should sent him to a psychist.
If this is what big-headed stars are like these days no wonder everyone hates them on the internet and in real life.

But why does it have to be a rant? he is just expressing how he feels, it’s his show he can do that, and a lot of what he say makes sense. Say what you want about Kanye but he is always blatantly honest about his feelings sometimes to a fault but honest. He cares about his music and his craft and I think he has a very creative mind. Kanye may be talented and just “extremely passionate” but his poor attitude and ungratefulness overshadow that. There’s nothing wrong with loving what you do, having goals and wanting more for yourself, but remain humble and be thankful you’ve received the recognition that you have. There’s plenty of artists who are equally as talented an deserving that have never been rightfully acknowledged for their work but they never act ungrateful. And sorry, maybe this is just me but “N***as In Paris” had a nice beat, that’s all. It wasn’t a prolific record of the year.

The fact of the matter is, and always will be, that art, in all its forms, is a SUBJECTIVE form of expression. What could be deemed AMAZING by one person, could be looked at as pure trash by someone else. You would think after like 10 years in the music business Kanye would have begun to understand that. Just because HE thinks he’s the best/hardest working/most creative being in the music industry doesn’t mean that everyone else will. Okay, so you did a clothing line and it got some negative reviews…..uhmmm, what did you think you were gonna come out the gate become Alexander McQueen on your FIRST runway show? It’s great to be passionate and serious about your art (as all artists should be), but it’s quite another to think you’re higher than others and we should all be licking your boots….which is how Kanye comes across with these tirades. It just makes his art seem less genuine when he’s whining about awards and reviews.

I believe Kanye West is one of the top 100 greatest rappers in hip hop history and music history. I believe Kanye West is one of the top 100 greatest producers in hip hop history and music history. I believe Kanye West is one of the top 10 greatest mainstream rappers of all-time. I believe Kanye West is one of the top 10 best rappers in hip-hop right now. I believe Kanye West is better than 90 percent of today’s music artists. Kanye West has always been a great music artist, a great producer, a very, good rapper, a very, good film director, and a very, good, talented fashion designer.

I will always be a fan of Kanye West’s music, and I agree with Kanye West that Kanye West’s 5th solo album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was the best critical-acclaimed album of 2010, and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy should had been nominated for Album of The Year at the 2012 Grammy Awards, but there are several reasons why My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was not nominated for Album of The Year at the 2012 Grammy Awards. First reason why Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy wasn’t nominated for Album of The Year is because the Grammy Awards voters hate Kanye West’s personalty, so the Grammy Awards voters are very biased towards Kanye West when it comes to winning Grammy Awards outside of the rap field. Kanye West has won 18 Grammy Awards which is a great achievement, but all of Kanye West’s 18 Grammy Awards wins have only come inside the rap field categories. I believe the Grammy Awards voters outside of the rap categories don’t like Kanye West’s personalty, so they vote against Kanye West’s music which is not always fair to Kanye West. There was a lot of industry politics that prevented Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album from getting an Album of The Year nomination at the 2012 Grammy Awards.

Second reason why Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album didn’t get an Album of The Year nomination at the 2012 Grammy Awards is because the Grammy Awards are very racist and prejudice towards rappers winning Album of The Year. Outkast is the only hip-hop/rap group to win Album of the Year. Lauryn Hill is the only female hip-hop/rap/R&B music artist to win Album of The Year. No other rappers have ever won Album of The Year at the Grammy Awards. There is a lack of respect for hip-hop at the Grammy Awards amongst Grammy Awards voters who truly don’t understand hip hop. Hip-Hop has been around for almost 30 years, but only Outkast and Lauryn Hill have won Album of The Year despite several great hip hop albums that have came out over the years that were truly deserving of winning Album of The Year.

It makes no sense that Arcade Fire won Album of The Year at the 2011 Grammy Awards for The Surburbs which got great critical acclaim, but was a commercial failure; but Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fanatsy got great critical acclaim, univeral acclaim, 95 percent on Metacritic, and was certified platinum with All of The Lights being a critical hit song, but Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album couldn’t get an Album of The Year nomination. I believe the Grammy Awards truly hate all rappers who make better music than all of the music artists from different genres. Kanye West is a great music artist, but ever since Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Music Awards, the Grammy Awards have been truly hateful towards Kanye West’s great music. It doesn’t help Kanye West because everyone knows that Kanye West acts like asshole and a jerk in public, and the biased mainstream media hates Kanye West. It’s hard to like Kanye West as a person, but Kanye West is a great music artist and he told the truth this time around.

    TRA Reply:

@TRA, I believe the third reason why Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album didn’t get nominated for Album of The Year at the 2012 Grammy Awards is for the simple reason that the Grammy Awards wanted Adele’s 21 album to win Album of The Year. Adele is a very, talented singer and Adele is more popular with the biased mainstream media, even though Kanye West puts out better music than Adele. Adele makes safe music, and Adele has a great personalty, so Adele is popular with Grammy Awards voters. There is no question that Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album is a better critical-acclaimed album than Adele’s 21 album, but Adele’s 21 album had three big hit singles, and was the best selling album of 2011.

A lot of people believed that Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album and Kanye West/Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne album split votes and that was the biggest reason why Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album didn’t get an Album of The Year nomination at the 2012 Grammy Awards, but I seriously doubt that was the biggest reason why Kanye West didn’t get an Album of The Year nomination at the 2012 Grammy Awards. The Grammy Awards wanted Adele to win, if Kanye West would had been nominated, Kanye West would had been a huge threat to win Album of The Year. The Grammy Awards only want Kanye West to win in the rap field categories. Even if MBDTF and Watch The Throne split votes, the Grammy Awards voters and Grammy Awards committee should had did the right thing, and nominated MBDTF for Album of The Year. There is no question that industry politics plays a huge role when it comes to rappers winning Grammy Awards outside of the rap field categories.

But Kanye is right… He was complaining about Rappers in the major categories. If you look back at the Grammy winners in the Big Four categories (Best New Artist, Song, Record n Album of the Year) you won’t see a Rapper there. Actually, only one: Outkast (Album), but SO WHAT? In 55 years of the Grammys, only ONE rapper act ever won in a major category??? Seriously, unbelievable! If that’s not prejudice, then what’s that?!

    [Reply]

  29. Will

Yeah a lot of people are missing the point. He is complaining about not getting a grammy in major categories because he believes that the industry is trained to value certain genre’s and certain artists above others. They create a hierarchy of importance with their award structure(saving album of the year for last etc, gives that award more importance than all of the others etc.) and then they exclude certain types of music(hip-hop) from being at that status they’ve created.

So, he is not complaining because HE wants more awards. Everything he’s done has been in effort to elevate his music/his people to a new status. And yes, I am aware black people have won major awards but not as hip-hop artists. In his mind there is no reason hip-hop can’t be treated with the same prestige as Opera.
