T.I. Press Conference

T.I. may not be headed to prison this Tuesday after all. The rapper has asked to delay serving his time so he can be reassigned to a minimum-security prison camp closer to his home in Atlanta.

T.I. is currently scheduled to check into prison on May 26 in Forrest City, Ark. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, T.I. has requested for a two-week delay to resolve the issue with the Bureau of Prisons.

Tip’s lawyers said he should be allowed to serve his time in a prison camp instead of a detention facility in Arkansas. T.I. was assigned to the Forrest City prison because he had a prior offense that was designated as a serious violent felony. The prior offense “amounted to little more than a ‘scuffle’ at a mall,” the motion said.

AJC also reports the difference between prison camps and detention facilities. Prison camps are minimum-security institutions with dorm housing, low staff-to-inmate ratios, and limited or no perimeter fencing, whereas low-security prisons, like the one in Forrest City, are double-fenced with higher staff-to-inmate ratios. Both types of facilities have inmate work programs.

T.I. was sentenced to serve a year and a day for weapons possession and being a convicted felon with a firearm.
