New Music: Alessia Cara - 'Outlaws' + 'Seventeen'

  /  08.26.2015

Alessia Cara grabbed the world’s attention with her smash single “Here,” and ever since she’s maintained the hype with a steady drip of new music. Earlier this month, she performed a sparkling cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” and now Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe has premiered two fresh new cuts from her five-track debut EP Four Pink Walls, which comes out Friday.

Up first is “Outlaws,” in which Cara’s voice soars over jazzy horns and piano. It offers a strong Amy Winehouse impression, never a bad thing.

The other song is called “Seventeen,” and its pure pop immediacy. Over crashing drums and swirling synths Cara belts lyrics about mortality and youth.

“I’d wrap myself in blankets just to cover me from fears,” she sings, adding “that was then, now the night is mine.” It’s a stirring reflection on past and present, heavier stuff than we’re used to hearing on the radio. Yet, considering her undeniable pop appeal, radio is where you should expect to hear Cara’s voice once the EP drops.
