Beyoncé Adds Four Schools to Homecoming Scholars Program

  /  04.23.2018

Beyoncé keeps on giving. Last week, she announced a $100,000 Homecoming Scholars Awards Program, aimed to help four students at HBCUs with $25,000 apiece. Now, Google.org matched her donation to include four more students from different HBCUs.

Texas Southern University, Fisk University, Grambling State University, and Morehouse College are the newest schools to join the list. The previous four were Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee, and Bethune-Cookman. One student from each school will be recognized with $25,000 towards their 2018-2019 school year.

“Google understands the vital role historically black colleges and universities play in delivering a high quality and culturally responsive education,” said Maab Ibrahim, a program manager at Google.org. “In the last several years, Google has launched innovative programs to close the distance between Silicon Valley and HBCUs; we are proud to continue that commitment by matching Beyoncé’s generous donation.”

Queen Bey launched the Homecoming Scholars Award program following her historic performance at Coachella. As the first black woman to headline the annual festival, she shattered YouTube records with an homage to the HBCU homecoming weekend experience. This is ‘Yoncé’s second scholarship program following The Formation Scholars Award Program.

Beychella also continues making an impact on the music world. Following her show-stopping and critically-acclaimed set, three Beyoncé albums re-entered the Billboard 200, including 2016’s LEMONADE (No. 91), 2013’s BEYONCÉ (No. 138), and 2008’s I Am… Sasha Fierce (No. 160), according to Billboard. Additionally, Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child saw a combined 83 percent increase in sales and a 21 percent rise in on-demand audio and video streams.
