Exclusive Q&A: Nicole Scherzinger Talks 'X Factor' Hosting Gig

Nicole Scherzinger

After months of speculation, Nicole Scherzinger was announced as co-host of the U.S. edition of Simon Cowell’s singing competition “The X Factor,” airing this September on Fox. The 32-year-old singer is no stranger to reality shows, getting her start on “Popstars” with girl group Eden’s Crush and later joining the multi-platinum Pussycat Dolls. She attracted Cowell’s attention after guest judging on the U.K. version of his hit show.

staging-rapup.kinsta.cloud caught up with an exhausted Nicole, who was recouping from a “long night” of taping, to discuss her new gig, working with the snarky Brit, and how she’s preparing for her latest role.

How does it feel to be a part of the cast?
It feels great. I love keeping busy. It’s a challenge. It’s something new and it’s cool to be a part of such a phenomenal show. I was a part of “The X Factor” in London and Simon’s just amazing to work with. I’ve never really been a host before, so it’s definitely a new adventure for me. I’m making my job not traditional with all this stuff, so it’s a lot of fun.

Did Simon approach you with the opportunity?
Yes. After I judged on “The X Factor” U.K., Simon had talked to me ever since then, all the way since last year. He always expressed interest so that’s where we started our relationship, and I had a really great time on the show.

Were there ever discussions about having you on as a judge instead of a host?
There were talks going back and forth, but—I’m actually happy they asked me to host because for me, the reason I’m doing it is because this is what I love and this is what I know and this is what I’m passionate about. It’s my way to give back and pay it forward and be supportive and to kinda be the artist ambassador. I feel like I’m better served being a host because I’m able to empower the contestants and encourage them as opposed to having to be in a position to say no.

How did you prepare for the job?
I did one red carpet event [for] the American Music Awards, which kinda freaked me out. But it was cool. Honestly, I haven’t prepared. I think I’ve been preparing my whole life and it’s just kinda like being in the present. I love people so it’s easy for me because I’m able to work with people every day, work with these contestants and their families and help them go through this process.

You just started taping two days ago. How’s it going so far?
Amazing. Very, very long days. The show’s gonna be out of this world.
