Janelle Monáe

New York City got a wake-up call from Janelle Monáe, who brought her magnetic energy to the “Today” Concert Series on Thursday. The spunky singer delivered an electrifying performance of her single “Dance Apocalyptic” in Rockefeller Plaza as her fans danced and sang along.

“I am the electric lady and I am your morning coffee,” said Janelle before bursting into her funky jam.

Her album The Electric Lady is expected to sell 45-50,000 copies in its first week. “I wanted to focus on creating a new breed, a new 21st century woman someone who is not defined by her skin color or hair texture but by what she does for the community, how she goes into the community and nurtures the next generation,” she said.

Watch the Electric Lady rock the outdoor stage.
