Video: Sam Smith - 'Lay Me Down'

  /  02.05.2015

Sam Smith is using his voice to make a powerful statement. The Rolling Stone cover star stands up for equality and gay marriage in the emotional video for “Lay Me Down,” the latest single off his debut album In the Lonely Hour.

In the one-take clip, which was shot at a church in London, the British crooner stands at the altar mourning his husband, while family and friends sit behind him holding candles.

Halfway through, we see a flashback to his joyous wedding at the same church before cutting back to a somber Sam sitting alone. He dedicates the stirring visuals to “gay and transgendered men and women all over the world.”

“The ‘Lay Me Down’ music video holds a very dear place in my heart,” Sam told his fans on Instagram. “With this video, myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in.”

He continued, “This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country.”

He will duet with Mary J. Blige at Sunday’s Grammys, where he is nominated for six awards including Album of the Year.
