90 Hospitalized for Severe Intoxication at Chance the Rapper Concert

At least 90 concertgoers, many of them underage, were hospitalized for “severe intoxication” after drinking excessively during a Chance the Rapper-headlined concert at Connecticut’s Xfinity Theatre on Friday (July 21).

According to Hartford Deputy Chief Brian Foley, most of the minors were charged with underage drinking and given a summons to appear in court, as per Billboard. Several attendees were also arrested throughout the “Hot Jam” event, which was organized by local radio station Hot 93.7.

Foley told The Hartford Courant that this show, which also featured KYLE and PnB Rock, was an outlier with regards to underage drinking referrals. “A ‘typical’ concert is around 20-30 transports,” he explained. “60 would be very bad. We had 70 once and 90 last night. It depends on the act that is in town and the fan base age…The fan base last night appeared to be in the late teens and early 20s. Tailgating, partying, and excessive alcohol consumption was extremely prevalent.”

Foley shared videos from the scene on Twitter. “Did you drop your teen off at the concert tonight?” he asked parents. “This is what it looks like. & HPD is enforcing underage drinking in the lots. HPD has made a high number of Underage Drinking Referrals. I’m told there was an extraordinary number of EMS transports of severe ETOH. Additional steps will have to be taken to address these issues at these concerts.”

Chance the Rapper has yet to make a public statement about the event.

Up next, Chance is performing at Lollapalooza in his hometown of Chicago on Aug. 5 and at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall with Dave Chappelle on Aug. 17. From there, he’ll be performing at Los Angeles’ Day N Night on Sept. 9 and Las Vegas’ Life Is Beautiful on Sept. 22 before continuing his “Be Encouraged Tour” on Sept. 26 in New York.
