Video: Kevin Gates - 'Imagine That'

  /  09.25.2017

Hot off the release of his By Any Means 2 mixtape, the incarcerated Kevin Gates unleashes an emotional and personal video for his latest single, “Imagine That.”

The Pasqual Gutierrez-directed clip begins with a phone conversation between Gates and his daughter Islah, who talks about her upcoming birthday party. “When my time’s up, I’m coming home,” he tells her. “You’re going to have two birthday parties.”

Islah and her brother Khaza pop up throughout the visual, offering adorable moments. Their growth is documented through fun, short clips. In some scenes, Islah gets her hair done by her mom, Dreka, who doubles as Kevin’s wife and manager.

Sitting on a bike and bed, Islah sings along to her father’s lyrics. “I came up from nothing, just imagine that,” she mouths. “Now I got my own, just imagine that.” Later, she speaks to him on the phone once again, telling him that he’s “locked in a cage.” The clip ends with Dreka, Islah, and Khaza waiting for Kevin under a “Welcome Home” banner.

“I’m sure many of you out there can relate to this, but not having my husband/best friend/father to my children home right now, makes our life really hard sometimes,” said Dreka. “It’s the simple things like birthday parties and family gatherings that we take for granted. And it’s tough for our kids to understand. I empathize with any of you out there going thru the same thing, with loved ones who are locked up. Hopefully this video will connect with you guys.”

Gates is currently behind bars for gun possession. Prior to that, he was in jail on weapons charges and for kicking a fan in the face.
