Crips End Trademark War with Nipsey Hussle's Family

The Crips are putting their trademark dispute with Nipsey Hussle’s family in the past.

In May, both the Crips and Nipsey’s brother, Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom, filed trademark applications for the late rapper’s catchphrase “The Marathon Continues.” Now the street gang is withdrawing its application and apologizing to Nipsey’s family.

An official for Crips LLC, the official company formed on behalf of the Crips street gang, tells The Blast, “there will absolutely be no trademark legal battle between their organization and Blacc Sam, brother of the late Nipsey Hussle.”

The statement adds that the company, “respectively vows to support the wishes of Lauren London and the Asghedom family.”

William King Hollis, corporate communications director for the Crips LLC, adds, “We are deeply sorry for any disruptions and melee that the trademark acquisition may have caused to his family, friends and fans.”

Hollis said that he had been in contact with Nipsey prior to his death, and the two had agreed on plans for a “mutual collaboration” for “The Marathon Continues.”

According to documents, Nipsey’s brother filed an application on May 28 to trademark “The Marathon Continues” for various uses, including entertainment services, music, and “charitable activities and the doing of good deeds for others and the promotion of ethical and character values.”

The Marathon name has become synonymous with the Crenshaw legend. He owned the Marathon Clothing store in South Central L.A., where he was killed in March, and released two mixtapes with the name, 2010’s The Marathon and 2011’s The Marathon Continues.
