Report: Grammys to Pay Tribute to Nipsey Hussle

  /  01.15.2020

The Marathon continues.

The Recording Academy will reportedly pay tribute to Nipsey Hussle at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards. According to HITS Daily Double, the Grammys are planning a “major segment” in celebration of the late rapper at L.A.’s Staples Center, where his memorial was held.

An official announcement has yet to be made. Earlier today, the Grammys officially added Tyler, The Creator, Camila Cabello, H.E.R., Jonas Brothers, and Rosalía to the performer lineup. They join previously-announced performers Ariana Grande, Lizzo, Billie Eilish, and Demi Lovato.

Nipsey, who was nominated for Best Rap Album for Victory Lap last year, is nominated for three awards at this year’s ceremony including Best Rap Performance (“Racks in the Middle”), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (“Higher”), and Best Rap Song (“Racks in the Middle”).

In a recent interview with Rap-Up, his “Racks in the Middle” collaborator Roddy Ricch reflected on Nipsey’s impact. “He was more than just another rapper to me. He was one of the young motivational role models in the city,” he said. “He really had a positive connection with young people. It wasn’t always about being the toughest or trying to prove yourself or be something you wasn’t. It was more so about being who you were and always having a strong mentality in whatever you wanted to do as far as your ventures.”

The Grammy tribute comes less than a year after the 33-year-old rapper was shot and killed outside his Marathon Clothing store on March 31.

Hosted by Alicia Keys, the 62nd annual Grammy Awards will air live on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
