Trey Songz Reveals Favorite Jay-Z Song, Potential Collaboration

Trey Songz and Jay-Z

The past year has been full of career highs for Trey Songz. His latest album Ready went gold, he landed his first-ever Hot 100 Top 10 single with “Say Aah,” and can currently be seen playing arenas nationwide on one of the biggest tours of the year. The R&B crooner checks in with staging-rapup.kinsta.cloud from the road to share what he brings to the “BP3” tour, his favorite Jay-Z song, and whether a collaboration with his tourmate is in the cards.

Shawn Carter may be the headliner, but Trey Songz has been pulling in the female fans night after night. “I told Jay, ‘I’m there for the ladies. I’m bringing more ladies out to you, Hov,'” Trey laughs. Each brings something different to the table. “Jeezy got the streets and Jay-Z is the blueprint. Simple and plain.”

Touring with Jigga has been a dream come true for Trigga, who grew up listening to the rap veteran. “Even before I knew that singing was something that I would be doing as a career, I would listen to Jay-Z all day,” he says. “Even though I’m an R&B singer, he’s one of my main inspirations, so to be on tour with him years later is surreal and definitely a testament to what hard work and persistence can get you.”

Even though he struggled to single out one record, “Lucky Me” from 1997’s In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 stands out as his favorite Jay-Z song. “I’m a Jay-Z fan, front to back, since the first album. ‘Lucky Me’ is a very, very dope song ’cause in the lyrics, it says, ‘You only know what you see/ You don’t understand what it takes to be me.’ Before I had fame and fortune, I used to listen to that song and I’d feel his pain. He’d talk about the great part of success and this was before The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse, and a lot of those things have come to realization. I still love that song to death.”

Now that his dream has become a reality, what are the chances of a collabo between him and his Mob Squad partners in crime? “Ask Jay,” he jokes. “We’ve spoken about collaborations—Jay, Jeezy, and I—and hopefully it all works out. I’mma do my part. I got a record to play [Jay]. We’ll see what it is.”
