Rap-Up.com || New Music: JoJo – ‘The Other Chick’ [Final]

JoJo fans can finally breathe easy. After a nearly five-year hiatus, label setbacks, and a mixtape (Can’t Take That Away From Me), the 20-year-old songbird makes her official return to music with “The Other Chick,” the first single from her third album Jumping Trains (Interscope).

The Boston-bred vocalist sheds her youthful image of the past, growing up right before our eyes on the mid-tempo jam, where she discovers that she is the side chick. Starting out subtle, the track increases with intensity as she powers through the chorus. “Come to find out, that I’m the other chick/ And you never loved me/ She was so over me,” she sings. But instead of acting out in anger, she carries on with a laugh.

Pop/Rock isn’t JoJo’s style, but I like it a lot. I think its a very radio friendly song and I can see it doing well. I’m sure she has R&B and other genres on Jumping Trains. Welcome back JoJo! I hope your label promotes the hell out of you! :D

It’s okay. I think it has the potential to grow on me, but something like “In the Dark” was so instant for me that this is a bit of a disappointment. Lyrically I think it’s a little try hard (“…’cause I’m the one you put your mouth on” and “I faked it everytime” especially), though, and I wish she would have picked something to show off her voice more. I know electro stuff is what’s hot right now, but a lot of the top pop stars don’t have terribly strong vocals and that could have separated this track even more from the pack.

I don’t know, I’m still excited to hear “Jumping Trains” and I hope this is a monster smash for her.

@Barbie, Every artist, no matter how talented, will filter the vocals with EQ and at least a small amount of autotune. It doesn’t distract from the final product. This record is great.

it’s called audio engineering, woman. and it’s no Antares EVO in terms of “autotune” but, it’s what audio engineers do to smooth out vocals, and, sometimes, to add effects (as it seems here…the pop’d out effect fits)
it doesn’t take an audio engineer to pick out the fact that she didn’t even get Autotuned as you wanna call it… she got EQ’d to modify what was already a smooth vocal run, and give it a bit of a lo-fi effect while still keeping vocal presence.

…and i’m not even an audio engineer.
well, i’m a beatmaker, often called a producer (although producers are both beatmakers and audio engineers, the latter in which I only work on VERY loosely for my mixdowns)

JoJo has been my favorite singer since her debut. Something about this girl just….sticks! I could never make her #TheOtherChick

I love how this song is a perfect mix of everything we want to hear on the radio…in one song! It’s very eclectic. Soulful vocals, Electro-Pop synths, “Rock” vibes from the heavy drums…I think that once people start hearing this on radio…people who know JoJo or not are going to love this! She was smart for making this her first single.

I’ve heard the other two unedited versions of “The Other Chick” ranging from the sassy explicit version (“The Other Bitch,”) to the more lovelorn apathetic longer version(“The Other Chick”) that leaked on Youtube and Twitter a few days back. At first, the song didn’t excite me the way that her previous single “(I Only Know Him) In the Dark” did, but after a few listens to it, I wholeheartedly decided that this song is a grower, one that’s easily catchy and a fun sing a long. Not to mention the true to life lyrics that JoJo sings about, let’s be honest, we all know that at some point in time we’ve played the second best role during a relationship. Anyway, I’m exceedingly excited about the musical comeback and the new material JoJo will present during this Jumping Trains era. It’s been a very long time coming, and from the looks of it, this choo-choo is headed towards a destination. We just have to wait and see whether or not we want to settle in, or, “jump the train.”

Why do I feel like every time there’s some sort of effect on a singer’s voice people call it autotune??? It’s not all autotune… There are a large number of effects that can be layered on that don’t mask singing out of tune, and even auto-tune isn’t the best at that… Instead of assuming this song is going to do poorly, wait and see. JoJo might just surprise you…

People – when artist release mixtapes they can take more chances without their labels and handlers all in their business. JoJo even said she wanted to experiment musically with her mixtape. Her album is going to naturally be more commercial and for the masses not just the music-heads.

When I heard this song I initially thought wow, JoJo’s voice sounds amazing but didn’t like the track.
Now about two hours since first hearing it, it’s still in my head and I found myself singing it absentmindedly out loud. Therefore everyone saying this song is a “grower” is obviously correct.

I don’t think JoJo will ever “flop”, when she has so many fans behind her and alot of commerical appeal. I think because JoJo has such an amazing voice, we want to hear soul and humungous vocals from her-but not all the time. This song is fun and easygoing and her record company know that they have to reintroduce her with a song similar to her first two hits from the pop genre because people need to refamilarise themselves with her before they start to buy all her music.(and when people hear it on the radio they want people to go that sounds like jojo!)

Now I just really want to see her music video and her on a Kanye West Track.
Seriously she murders Rhianna vocally. I wish her the best. Her old label really screwed her. Let’s hope her new one pushes her forward.

@E, WORD. This will hit the radio. And people will say “WTF.” Then, they will look it up. And they will be like, “OH. SH**. JOJO’S BACK!?” And then you will hear radios in Harlem blasting the JoJo single. (BECAUSE EVERYONE LISTENS TO POP NOW. EVEN THE HOOD.)
After one listen, I shrugged.
After two listens, I began to bob my head.
I began listening to this an hour and a half ago.
I CAN’T STOP PRESSING THE RE-PLAY BUTTON.

And I’ve been a JoJo fan from the start. A grower that’s sure to re-establish Jo as a force to be reckoned with in the music game.
I laugh at those who slept on her. ^_^
She murders…wait…right now…in the industry…I honestly can’t think of a single artist on the charts that’s actually more talented than her in terms of vocal abilities.

One of the few artists that could probably appear, pull platinum numbers without even trying, and probably interrupt all this Bieber, Britney and Gaga crap type QUICK. Who else can go platinum for free? There can be that many fans when there’s that much talent. Everyone thought Christina died out…and then the Burlesque SOUNDTRACK (mind you, it’s a movie soundtrack) actually made the Top 100.

@JoJoUKSupport, she’s got to yank all the people who’ve been listening to crappy pop music. her appeal to urban radio…she just needs to come through with ONE R&B single, and it’s going to #1 because the R&B charts are effing DEAD. someone’s got to fill that void. but she’s gonna have to set these lil’ poppy boppers straight and let ‘em know what GOOD POP MUSIC IS. because…you know, good pop does exist. hahaha. no doubt, Jumping Trains is going to have quite the double appeal. I believe it.

been following jojo the whole way through [being the same age and all] and she has never failed. Her recent mixtape was worth going platinum, one of my favorites! I can’t wait to see what this actual album has in store. Great single but I know there’s gonna be even more golden songs in there! <3

I love JoJo no matter what but I don’t think pop is her. I like it when she sings more blues songs because her voice fits it well. Like I said I love her no matter what but this is to musch pop for her. She has an amazing voice and I think this song will grow on me. And I can’t wait for her album to come out! :)

DEFINITELY gonna be one to grow. Took me a good three or four listens to really hop onto this one. Not bad. As a JoJo faithful…not the best choice for a first single, seeing as the first single should most definitely be the explosive monster that grabs everyone, in terms of marketability…but, somehow, I definitely think this one, over time, can make quite an impact on the charts, especially with the AMPLE room in the industry right now for something that isn’t quite Gaga or Bieber. Not THE best showing of her voice, and certainly not at the leaked “Hollywood” level (a tear-jerker, no lie…still get shivers from that one, four months later…), but one for radio impact. Appeals to a new crowd (teeny boppers will love it), but, at the same time…she IS 20 now…I certainly hope “Jumping Trains” and the rest of the album makes more of an appeal to her true-to-life fans (who are probably around my age…I’m 20…lol) and shows that pang of maturity and adulthood that hits us all when we hit the real world around this time in our lives.
I’d say, a solid 7/10, but I’m expecting MUCH MORE, personally, seeing as we’ve had to sit here and wait for five years because Da Family/Blackground hates us all (and her as well).

@DeeJay, I’m TOTALLY giving in a rebuttal of MY OWN COMMENT HERE.
Takes about five listens to really sink in. Listen #1, not being used to the sound, 7/10.
When it fully sinks in…you realize how FIRE this track is…SOLID 10/10 (I’ll give it an 11/10 because I’m biased and I love this woman) for pure awesomeness.

Wow…

As much as I can’t stand the techno electro-pop (especially the modern king), JoJo MURDERED this record. Vocally and lyrically, this just blew every mainstream artist to kingdom come.

I really respect her fusion of R&B with rock and electro-pop…it’s bold but it’s a very smart choice for a first single. Adele opened a door for the vocally-talented and now JoJo is about to come thunderin’ in.

All we need is Mariah Carey to comeback with yet another bombass album and for Usher to step up to the plate…
