Drake: New Aaliyah Album Coming This Year

Drake and Aaliyah

Drake surprised Aaliyah fans when he debuted a new song called “Enough Said” over the weekend. But there’s more where that came from. The Young Money rapper shared details about a posthumous album from the late singer.

He and his go-to producer Noah “40” Shebib are spearheading the album, which is due later this year. “It’s all off an Aaliyah project that me and 40 are commanding,” he told MuchMusic backstage at the OVO Fest in Toronto. “40’s just doing some incredible, incredible music right now. To get 13, 14 new Aaliyah songs, everybody should be excited. It’s not about me, it’s not about 40. It’s really about her and her fans and us just getting the opportunity to give you something that we feel is great.”

While there have been unconfirmed reports that her family is not behind the project, Drake said otherwise. “The people around her, everybody from her family to her old management and label, were just like, if there’s anybody out that could do it right now, it’s me and 40. And that was an honor.”

In addition, he has enlisted some of her past collaborators. “We’re gonna pull in some classic people, like anybody who used to work with Aaliyah or that was essential in her career, we definitely hope to have them involved,” he said, adding, “We get a new Aaliyah album this year on top of everything.”

It’s likely that some of those people will include Aaliyah’s longtime collaborators Missy Elliott and Timbaland, who has expressed keen interest in the project. “The proper way for him to do that would be for me, him, and Missy to be all on the record,” the super-producer told Power 105.1 last week.

@W, No it isnt, cause the family isnt involved! Aaliyah brother said ‘There is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family’. That is just disrespectful, I dont like Drake, never liked him

Cool idea and all but I think it’s a bit OD honestly. I know one thing, there’s going to be so much pressure on this album and it can’t be no less than good. Good luck…

A lot of people like to judge and criticize Drake when it comes to Aaliyah. Nobody knew the facts and people assumed he left out Timbo and Missy out of the project, he’s clearly interested in pulling certain people in the project that were important in Aaliyah’s music career. The entertainment business is a shady one but I highly doubt Drake would continue this album if he did not get the blessings from her family & label. I’m excited for this album. Who wouldn’t want to hear unreleased music from Aaliyah? I appreciate Drake and 40 for taking on this album because I know that those 2 guys will create really great music for her fans.

He Has No Right ‘ i think it should be left to her family & missy & timb . They actually knew her . We liked bany girl songs because of their input . No because of ” 40 ” pne song was enough drake . Let it alone ! !

Let the detractors stay pressed. I will def be supporting this endeavor. Fingers crossed for a J. Cole feature because his take on “Best Friend” was sensational.

If Aaliyah’s family is ok with it, then everyone else should be ok with it too and stop blaming Drake because he’s not the one that started this project, her family asked him to do it. Let’s just be happy that we get to hear Aaliyah’s beautiful voice again.

Call him fake the only fake rappers out there have no meaning in there songs. its just a bunch of bullshit put into a rap to rhyme. Listen to lyrics before joining. Its called doing the right thing because you go easy on someone in music you get taken advantage of. Dumb shit.

NO, IM NOT EXCITED TO HEAR NEW AALIYAH MUSIC ESPECIALLY IF DRAKE IS INVOLVED ON A PRODUCING LEVEL. IM SORRY I’M NOT FEELING IT. I LOVE AALIYAH BUT WHERE DOES DRAKE COME IN, AS IF HE ALREADY HAS THAT TYPE OF CLOUT!?!? HE DIDNT EVEN KNOW HER, NONE OF US DID, BUT IM NOT SITTING HERE TATTOOING HER FACE ON MY BODY! THATS VISIBLE THIRST! EVERYBODYS IN LOVE WITH AALIYAH NOW THAT ITS BEEN 11 YRS SINCE HER DEATH

    [Reply]

    Old School Era Reply:

@Jay85, Drake isnt producing it 40 is you dumbass. Drake is just executive producing it which means he will help with behind the scenes work with the label, budget, etc in order to get the album to come out. The whole album will be just Aaliyah tracks. Timbaland and Missy will produce a couple tracks on there too. Im sure the end result will have people happy cause honestly i dont know why people are complaining.

    [Reply]

    Raj Reply:

@Jay85, You sound dumb as hell. He has an Aaliyah tat … the fuck does it matter to you? People have Elvis tats, Curt Cobain tats, MJ tats and tats of LIVING people. That’s not ‘visible thirst,’ that’s respect.

@Hank, OLDSCHHOL, AND RAJ… 1ST OFF YA OBVIOUSLY DONT KNOW HOW TO READ. THE SAME WAY YOU EXPRESS YOUR OPINION ON HERE I CAN DO THE SAME SHIT. YA DONT HAVE TO AGREE WITH ME BUT SITTING HERE TRYNA GET AT PPL ABOUT HAVING AN OPINION IS JUST SHEER FUCKING IGNORANCE. AND YES 40 ALONG WITH DRAKE BEING “AN EXECUTIVE PRODUCER” IS THE SAME SHIT. ITS APPARENT SOME OF YA SUCK DRAKE. GO LOOK UP WHAT “CLOUT” MEANS. SOMEONE OF DRAKE’S CALIBUR OF ARTISTRY SHOULD NOT GRANT HIM SO MUCH POWER OF A PROJECT OF SUCH A TALENT LIKE AALIYAH. SO CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU COME DISRESPECTING SOMEONE ELSE.

    [Reply]

    AAA Reply:

@Jake, Lol THANK YOU!!!!!! I can’t stand people say this is disrespectful, why because he didn’t know Aaliyah like that?, shutup if y’all had a chance to work with someone you idolize you would do it. Stop calling someone names that you dont know..because I bet you so called “Aaliyah fans”wouldn’t give a damn if she had new music if it was produced by timb and missy…you guys just simply love hating thats all you know

    [Reply]

  13. Old School Era

You people are fkn stupid. Timbaland and Missy werent the only producers who worked with Aaliyah. if you ever listened to Aaliyahs last album the majority of it was produced by no name in house producers and only 3 tracks were produced by Timbaland. If anyone besides Missy and Timbaland could do justice to Aaliyahs unreleased material its Noah “40″ Shebib. He produced Jojos new single Demonstrate which is an 100% R&B record and prob the best r&b record thats come out from a female in the past 5 years. This Aaliyah album is gonna happen whether people like it or not but i am sure it will be amazing. Aaliyah fans shouldnt be complaining at all. Keeping her name alive is what she would want not people hating cause most the people that are listen to all the crap music thats out today and werent even old enough when Aaliyah was alive.

    [Reply]

    Asa Reply:

@Old School Era, HELL TO THE NO

Demonstrate is by far one of the worst JoJo songs ever. Vocals on point as usual, but the song’s production is awful. Truly terrible.

Just like that Aaliyah song with Drake out now, only JoJo’s track is free from Drake’s awful “talent”.

Is it just me or is this whole project looking real sloppy? I’ve never been a supporter of ANY posthumous albums for any artist. For someone else to say this is this is musical what that person would have done or where the evolution was headed is so presumptuous and pompous.

    [Reply]

  17. RG2

I think the money that the album produces should be given to the family so that they can donate it to one their/Aaliyah’s favorite charities.

    Another bad idea!
The lack of original ideas an material has put a whole generation of listeners to waist!
I am so sorry for all of you under 25′s cause you have missed the best time in R&B…
What they serve you is left overs and low quality noise pollution.
RIP AAliyah..So sad to see this happening!

Question….so are these unreleased tracks 40 is just reproducing? Or are these new vocals? How do they do that?

    [Reply]

    Old School Era Reply:

@Meme, There going to take aaliyahs vocals on unreleased material and remaster it to new beats basically.

They’re missing two people who are going to be crucial to the continuation of Aaliyah’s sound. Of course, Aaliyah herself. And Static Major. Without them it can be alright, tolerable, but it will not sound like authentic Aaliyah material. I’m sorry.
