Frank Ocean Performs ‘Forrest Gump’ at Grammys

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean took home two awards at Sunday’s Grammys and also graced the stage. As the telecast came to a close, the Odd Future crooner sported a yellow suit and performed “Forrest Gump” off his album channel ORANGE, which won the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. He also picked up a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “No Church in the Wild.”

During his set, screens showed his legs running down a road with skaters and cheerleaders behind him. The footage was taken from his upcoming music video for the song.

Watch Frank make his Grammy debut.

@Jacki, the way he sung the song was totally wrong but Frank is very talented. The song is based on the movie Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump was a football player who reunited with the love of his life after leaving her by going to the army. Frank tells his story of his Forrest Gump but this is a really good song and his album is GREAT!

Worst performance I have ever heard. Saw no musical talent whatsoever. Every key he sang in was the WRONG ONE! I appreciate some of all genres of music, but dude was a one-man wrecking machine on that song. He destroyed it. They had to have cleaned him up in studio. His whistling was even off key! What in the world was that? The audience was even in shock. After all of those nominations, I thought I was about to hear a musical genius. He murdered that song! Killed it DEAD! Please, no resurrection. Bury it! I hope I am never subjected to such ever again in my lifetime! #FrankOceanNeedsToFindSomethingElseToDo

Frank Ocean is truly a remarkable artist, but I have to agree with some of these comments. Out of all the great songs on Channel Orange he chose that one. If your introducing yourself to such a broad audience he def should have went with something like Pyramids or Sweet Life. I will also say that the Grammys are on some biased bullshit to have picked Mumford and Sons over Frank for Album of the Year. Not doubting Mumford and Sons talent but Channel Orange was def better than Babel, it topped almost ALL of the critics “best album” lists…phew i had a lot to say lol

    [Reply]

    F1 Reply:

@massiveattack5, The Grammy Academy choose what songs the artist sing. For example, Nicki Minaj was going to perform
Champion last year but they told her to sing Roman Holiday because it would be more interesting. In my opinion he should have sang “Lost” because I think he could have earned more fans.

    [Reply]

    T Reply:

@F1, Agreed! Lost would have been dope!!!
Yea they pick everyone’s songs. I still think they was being funny picking that bullshit. No offense to any Nicki fans. That was bullshit

Frank isn’t the strongest vocalist by far but his songwriting, production and arranging skills are ill.

If Rihanna’s finally getting great live reviews after all these years there’s hope for Frank. Everyone can grow.

But singing is not his best talent as of now.

Let’s cut to the chase here….that was truly the single worst Grammy performance in history. This dude is singing about how much he loves Forrest Gump which makes no earthly sense whatsoever. The crowd was pretty much emotionless, and this yahoo Ocean didn’t deserve to be nominated for a single award.

    Forrest Gump – “you’re so buff and wouldn’t kill a beetle.” 3 letters…W.T.F.??????????????????????????????????????????

Ocean’s 2 Grammys tonight speaks volumes on how much the Urban contemporary category needs talented musicians.

    [Reply]

    MC Reply:

@Rex Johnson, if you seen the movie Forrest Gump Forrest is a stupid character. Frank is putting him self in Jane’s shoes(Forrest’s love interest) because he doesn’t see what she sees in him. He is hoping that if he looks at himself through her eyes he may see something.

Absolute worst performance of the year and proves this kid is overhyped and that music is dead. All the winners were pathetic and akin to street corner or coffee house acts. Fun. Anyone? And to all the people on here bashing someone because they “don’t get’ the so-called genius of a song ripped from a 15+ year old movie is asinine. Hopefully, Frank will go sit down next to Flock of Seagulls and Weird Al Yankovich. They won Grammys too…just saying

    [Reply]

    KAM Reply:

@KokoB, Thank you. Getting a Grammy is not a sign of incredible talent, any more than winning a Nobel Peace prize means you’re anti-war. In both cases, it’s a lot of politics. I’d never heard of this Ocean guy before, and certainly didn’t know he was gay, nor did I get that from this song, but as usual, anyone who dislikes a gay singer is immediately accused of being a hater or anti-gay, even if they didn’t know he was gay.

Can’t I just say this was a stupid song, about a stupid movie character, sung in a less than stellar fashion – based solely on the performance?

That’s how I found this site. I typed in “Forest Gump – Worst song ever”, just to see if I was alone in my assessment. I thought it was an incredibly lame song, and not performed well, either, but they were acting like he was the greatest gift, so I was just curious. I had no idea this was a gay song, or singer, so I’m pretty sure I didn’t dislike it because he’s so gay. I just didn’t like it. Period.

I am no Chris Brown lover. I am a singer, writer and player of music. I’ve also taught and directed groups. He sounds like some of my tone deaf individuals who really think they can sing
This was my first time hearing him. Not a hater, just stating the facts. His performance was piss poor at best. It is obvious that music journalist had already written their articles beforehand because they came out immediately as favorable as if it was stunning. The audience reaction tells it all. The masses didn’t stand or clap for a fellow artist. He just didn’t delver. That wouldn’t even pass for a neighborhood talent show. Some just can’t accept that others were not impressed with him musically. Go to other sites and you will see the same type of comments no matter how good the journalist reviews are. #keepingitreal

Wow! I’ve never heard frank ocean before but that performance was amazingly underwhelming. I don’t usually comment on things on the Internet but I can’t help it this time–that act was so shocking in this day and age of enormous talent in every category of earthly life (besides maybe the most commercialized, formulaic junk we love to consume). I had to search “forest gump Grammy joke?” And pulled this board up…. I kept telling myself “maybe he was embodying forest gumps’ simplicity by singing a total of maybe 3 keys so terribly.” But I couldn’t convince myself. It sounded like the kind of song we all make up when we’re teenagers and experiencing very cliche emotions for the first time but feeling them so deeply we just have to pick up that guitar our friend taught us to play three chords on and start crooning our cliche thoughts out into the world– which is our disshevelled teenage bedroom. But somehow, frank’s made it onstage at the Grammies! No offense frank lovers, there are lots of terrible singers who are great songwriters, but surely this was no showcase of his writing skills either. Poor guy! He’ll be embarrassed for life. Oh well, good joke! I wish snl would do a skit of it so I can keep experiencing the thrill of it. Now that I’m over the shock and confusion, it keeps getting funnier. Ha! Hahahaha! HA! HAHAHA! I love it. Thank you frank! I’m feeling so liberated! Why do we all expect perfection anyway. Wow. That’s wonderful. Thank you.

Being a professional musician I am aware of monitor and technical problems, this was WAY beyond that. This was a fucking disgrace and slap in the face to worthy musicians who truly deserve recognition. Just goes to show if you have the right people behind you anything is possible. And when I mean anything, I mean someone performing at the Grammys who would have got boo’d off stage at the Apollo!

Man, I cant beleive half of these comments. Couldn’t you see he was nervous? He’s just a kid from LA, 2 years ago no one knew his name, now he’s performing at the Grammys. Of course he’s gonna be a tad nervous, and that can have a big effect on your voice. I’m a huge frank ocean fan and I can truthfuly say that was a pretty poor performance, but I understand why he struggled to play to his potential, and I don’t discredit him as an artist in anyway because of it.
