Video: Ashanti – ‘Never Should Have’

Ashanti

Ashanti pours her heart out in the video for “Never Should Have,” the latest single off her first album in five years BraveHeart, due June 11. The R&B songstress conveys heartbreak through the emotional storylines. A teary-eyed Ashanti sings on the beach and wears a purple dress on a deserted road in the Sanji Senaka-directed clip, which was shot in Santa Barbara, Calif.

“It’s something for women, just being empowering. This album is something very deep,” the “Army Wives” star said of the follow-up to 2008’s The Declaration, which features production from Jerry Wonda, Detail, and Sak Pase. “I’m going places that I haven’t gone on different albums.”

Feel her pain in the stirring visuals.

I lOVEEE the whole RAW and REAL visual of this video. The song is very deep and she needed a video thats going to captivate that emotion and not some “movie” “fake” visual filming.

The visuals, the song all go with the Braveheart theme and concept. I 100% get where ashanti’s trying to go with this project. If people catch on to this i think Ashanti could put up really good album sales numbers. Hopefully this song does well on the charts.

This is the definition of what Indie music is. It’s not meant to always be cookie cutter. This represents the pain and beauty of real life. No Hollywood treatment, just real life. I love this song, video and Ashanti!

@Maze, this is not indie, gorl. PLEASE…. There is a huge dif between cheap and indie. Educate yourself bitch.

    Maze Reply:

@bobs, I don’t need to educate myself. Just because you don’t agree with me doesn’t mean you have to attack me. And for the record, I’m THAT BITCH! So don’t try it little girl.

    A'ron Reply:

@bobs, Actually @Maze you’re BOTH right. But, first off can I just say can we act like adults? No need to start a war over opinions. However, the fact of the matter is indie does mean little promotion and cheap videos. Indie labels don’t have the budget that larger labels do. So usually a indie label will give you a small amount of money to use towards the album budget. Most artists still end up having to pay out of pocket to cover this expense if they use big name producers. The artists then releases singles and based on sales and public/radio response (and if the label has recouped any of it’s money already given to the artists), will they decide to do any promotion or spend money on visual concepts (videos). Based on how her other singles have done, I would only have to guess that this video was probably not paid for by the label. An indie label doesn’t have that kind of money to hand out. Hand her other two singles just haven’t sold anything. That’s why most labels only release digital download singles/albums only. It cuts distribution charges and is one less finance. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the route this label decides to go with for Braveheart. I will say this is the only single she’s released off this album that I like.

This video sure does look cheap (direction and montage vise, not technology and locations). And this song is blah, I miss the old Ashanti… I hope this flops so she can move on to a better singer and forget all about this one.

I seriously have this song on repeat!!! This is one of Ashanti’s best songs!!! I’m definitely looking forward to hearing at seeing more from Ashanti. She should definitely do more movies as well as music. She was great in John Tucker Must Die and Resident Evil Extinction. Also, Rock Wit U, Rain On Me and The Way That I Love You are still the jams. Loving this song!!! :)
