J. Cole Taps TLC for ‘Born Sinner’

J. Cole and TLC

He enlisted Missy Elliott for his debut, and now J. Cole is calling on another iconic act for Born Sinner. The Roc Nation rapper has collaborated with TLC on his sophomore album.

During an interview with Fuse, Cole revealed that the R&B duo will be featured on the follow-up to his 2011 debut Cole World: The Sideline Story.

“I wanted to go with my favorites and then have them do the things that I love them for doing,” said Cole. “Like Missy Elliott on ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ sounds like Missy Elliott in the ’90s. It’s not like we try to go do something that’s not her. She’s doing what I loved her for. Same with TLC. They doing what I loved them for. Those are incredible features. TLC, that’s like a blessing even having them. That’s crazy.”

He recorded with T-Boz and Chilli separately. “I got T-Boz in L.A. She came out to the studio. I got her part. And I got Chilli in Atlanta. Just an incredible experience getting them there.”

Born Sinner will contain other guests, but no rappers. “There’s no rap features on the album. Nobody else other than J. Cole is rapping on the album, but there’s some great features,” he said.

TLC has also worked with Cole on their first album since 2003’s 3D.

Earlier this week, Cole announced that Born Sinner will drop a week earlier on June 18 to compete directly with Kanye West’s Yeezus.

@Ciara QUEEN Harris, Obviously your not a Ciara fan. I hate when people put their names as a celebrity name on web sites so that when people read the ignorant things that you say it makes people think of the artist you are pretending to be rather than the stupid things you said. you are disgusting.

I love how Cole has used Missy in the past and has TLC on this upcoming album. Along with Drake, who has sampled Aaliyah and Jon.B, several times.

It’s always refreshing to hear 90′s R&B artists.

@Coco, I know right? I love this. I especially love when it gets radio play and becomes popular. It’s like bringing back real music again (but just for a moment of a chorus). I don’t know why everyone else is being disrespectful. TLC is great.

@jaebaby, Please tell me this is sarcasm. Go listen to “Looking For Trouble”. Cole out rapped Kanye, Big Sean, and whoever else was on the track. #You Tried It Sis…. : )

    Jorge Reply:

@Breeangel, lmao Looking for trouble was just a song to show case good and cole. Do you really think Kanye will let any one out do him lol Also just enjoy the damn song no need to start seeing who did better. All of them went ham!

    Chauncey Reply:

@Jorge, lmfao!! Contrary to popular belief, Kanye is not God. He can be outdone. Cole has grown a lot from his first album. We’ll see who has the best one in terms of lyricism. Kanye may have the most sales, but when you’ve got a bunch of dickriders and bandwagons, that much is to be expected.

I’m Excited about this collab..)) I also appreciate him being the only rapper on his own tracks with r&b singers as features..I miss when those rappers (tupac, biggie, etc) they didn’t need 10+ rappers on one damn song to make it a hit..yep.. like most of the songs out now have so many rappers on one damn track i forget who the song is actually for . so i call them tracks DJ Khaled’s lmaooooooo

    @jcolenation, well call that unity

    [Reply]

    Jorge Reply:

@jcolenation, Pac & Big always had rappers on tracks lol Espeacially “Weed Carriers” On all Pac albums he had some lame rappers besides snoop, dre and sometimes the outlawz. And biggie had junior M.A.F.I.A. but biggie did have better rapper features though. But I do get what u mean, so disrespect lol

An album with no rap features, that idea is foreign to a lot of rappers these days (*cough* French Montana *cough*). Cole can definitely pull it off, I’d listen to a featureless Cole album easily, Born Sinner about to have that heat

Dream come true, my favorite rapper and my favorite group (well, two-thirds of the group) working together. I hear the song they are featured on is “Crooked Smile.” Anyway, is it just my thinking or does Cole definitely need to release another single prior to his album release? “Miss America” was an unofficial/buzz single and “Power Trip” is killing it right now …. but it’s been out since Feb. if I’m not mistaken. A follow-up would definitely be nice.
