Kanye West Flips Out on ‘Sway in the Morning’

Sway and Kanye West

Kanye West stopped by Power 105′s “The Breakfast Club” and SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning” on Tuesday, but only one radio show got him heated. When speaking to his friend Sway Calloway (the one who he gave a TV to), a very passionate ‘Ye lost his cool and flipped out.

“I’m standing up and I’m telling you, I am Warhol,” said ‘Ye. “I am the number one most impactful artist of our generation. I am Shakespeare in the flesh. Walt Disney, Nike, Google—now who’s gon’ be the Medici family and stand up and let me create more? Or do you want to marginalize me till I’m out of my moment?”

Sway responded, “Or why don’t you empower yourself and don’t need them and do it yourself?”

But Kanye didn’t take too well to the question and barked back. “How Sway?! You ain’t got the answers, man. You ain’t got the answers. I’ve been doing this more than you.”

When Sway told him to “chill out,” he said, “You ain’t spend $13 million a year of your money trying to empower yourself.”

Sway explained that he has spent hundreds of thousands on his clothing line, to which Kanye said, “And it ain’t no Ralph [Lauren] though. What’s the name of your clothing line? We don’t know.”

After Sway calmed him down, ‘Ye apologized for his outburst. “I love you man. I’m sorry.”

Kanye also explained how he wanted Big Sean to take off some of the songs on his album Hall of Fame. “It upset me as a hip-hop artist a bit. Now he gon’ turn up on this next one,” he said.

When Sway asked who would be No. 1 on MTV’s “Hottest MCs in the Game” list now, he said, Drake.

Watch both interviews below. Kanye’s confrontation with Sway starts around the 17-minute mark.

@Brian, He clearly isn’t the most impactful artist of our generation. He’s acting like he has some definite futuristic style that’s hard to duplicate. He’s definitely gifted but he isn’t a world phenomenon. He’ll never be Jay-Z status with a ego like that. People respect Jay-Z because he’s remained humble , and even he doesn’t support the community that supports him the most.

@Brian, I agree. You can tell Sway genuinely cares about Kanye — so for him Kanye) to fly off the handle and insult him (even though he later apologized…sorta…) caught him off guard. Sway was just trying to help, but Kanye took it the wrong way.

But I guess that’s what happens to all of us when dealing with those we love and care about most. We often flip out at friends/family in ways we wouldn’t flip out at a stranger.

Kanye overreacted because he was “cool” with Sway – and took his question as criticism, when it wasn’t meant that way.

He really needs to take some time off to chillax and reevaluate his life. I think he IS a genius, but his Ego is clouding his blessing. He is really in his own way (unintentionally) and his mindset about the “gatekeepers” is holding him back.

I hope he reads Marc Ecko’s “Unlabel” book and learn from his mistakes.

What makes this situation tragic is the fact that he is right about ”slavery”!
He (as an American) has a very limited understanding of how the European taliloring tradition and networking in European fashion works!
I feel sorry for him but he chose to pick the most racist business of them all:
When was the last time you have seen a black fashion designer having dinner with Karl Lagerfeld?
Or show in Paris!? Damn right! NEVER!
    He is damn right!

He is pushing hard but maybe into the wrong business…
He is right with 100% of what he says but the way he approaches it is also 100% wrong!
I can’t feel nothing but pity for him! I have never ever seen MJ , Prince or MAdonna complain about any issue in their lives so much!I am just tired of him talking on and on about the same damn things and neglecting his music!

    King Fierce Reply:

@fa, I get where you are coming from but I have to disagree. The fashion industry may be racist but if anybody had the power, influence, and resources to overcome that it would be Mr. West. The issue here is not the racism, it’s the amateur styling and design of his clothes. Interning at FENDI won’t cut it, I have no doubt that Kayne has the chops to be a great designer but he needs to improve and grow..just like he did with his music. Imagine if he would put as much heart and soul into his fashion as he did his music, he would shut the fashion game down.

Its funny how much I used to respect him as a person and an artist. He inspired so many rappers and along with Jay Z and TI (at the time) changed the rap industry. Now TI can’t come up with anything truly original (thank God he found Iggy) Jay Z’s last album was less than mind blowing and now Kanye’s album was the biggest disappointment out of him since Love Lockdown. He needs to focus on the music or even the music and fashion and breathe.
He has immense talent, he really is a musical genius. All of his positive traits are being over shadowed by how immature and childish he is though.

Not because Sway clothing line is much smaller does it means his experiences are irrelevant. thats one of the reasons you can loose millions of dollars, mr West. You only want to hear your self talking. If you really want to be the Steve Jobs for the next generation. I really think learning from the small business and lots of other people’s experiences is a good start.

I think he’s massively insecure. He’s climbed so high and the height he’s reached is terrifying him. “At any moment, this tower could fall”. So he is constantly worrying about how to insure what he has built- but he cannot do that. Why? Because there is no certainty. In his line of work, staying relevant and on top of the Billboard chart is not guaranteed. Tomorrow some young Kanye comparison will eat up the airwaves with a “Late Registration” sound a like and the kids (who are the main music buyers out there) will ask “Kanye who?”

Things do not move that quickly- but what did he say in “All Falls Down”? “I got a problem with spending before I get it. We’re all self conscious, I’m just the first to admit it!”

He needs to admit that to himself again. So that he can get out of this insecure “victim” cycle and get back to making the records that made him famous AND respected.

He’s being a baby right now. Hov needs to shake this dude from a boy to a man.

I think what no one realizes is that people go through changes.
First off, everyone keep reiterating about his music greatness, and he needs to diverge from this anger tour with all the radio stations….and “get back in the studio”…..BUT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE IS SAYING….that’s what all of the fashion industry people he mentions think as well.

DO WHAT YOU DO BEST, KANYE. STICK TO MUSIC.

I think Kanye’s word choice, his aggression when speaking, and what he’s known for drives people not to listen to what he saying, but to just see him, that’s the problem.

Financially I always understood why people needed backing. Its like telling an aspiring actress, to not go out and try to get in a movie, but to instead make her own movie, star in that, and then get it in the theaters. Its the same logic.

I’m mad at that freestyle though. lol
I hope he was just too angry to think.lol

Anger is not a mental illness, so to those that say he needs to sit down with a shrink….the reason he does these interviews is to get out the anger. Its working.

When you’re a true artist, most of what you do will be misunderstood. -CDD

@CurtisDonDeano, He’s not being understood. He’s rich and normal everyday people don’t understand what is he complaining about? He really thinks he’s some historical figure like “Elvis” he COULD be. But for him to sit here and make all these proclaims that he is “God” is offensive, and seems attention seeked because he knows this is what will keep him relevant. How dare he shit on the hand that feeds him? US “POOR PEOPLE” are what is making egotistical bitches like him rich. And let’s be clear Kanye is a great artist, but there are many musicians who are way more artistically gifted who aren’t famous. Kanye has let certifications, money, plaques, and awards define who he is.

People only respect him because of his temper tantrums he have to try and convince the public he is some type of awesome lunatic with good intentions

    @CurtisDonDeano,
Some good points made but we cannot make excuses for bad manners, rudeness or arrogance.

How can we take Kanye seriously when he call himself the new Shakespeare ?

As for aspiring actors and actresses going to hollywood, well many tread the boards of local and national theatre for years to improve their craft and prepare for the biggest of stages, so perhaps Kanye needs to show these fashion houses that he is actually a serious and credible designer, not just a popular recording artist with a popular girlfriend always seeking the fast track. He believes that his popularity should afford his a pass into their world ? Really ? So should Victoria Beckham (Posh spice) demand an audience with DJ Premiere, Dre, Diamond D, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock to do a collaboration because of her fashion credentials ?

He needs to fall back, grow up and start from the ground and learn the industry from top to bottom and stop fixating on who he thinks he is and his self proclaimed genius because we are not buying him or feeling him !!

I got one thing to say to Kanye: Billionare Boys Club Pharrell Williams has crossed over to the fashion world and is winning. only people who can afford that high over priced fashion is people with lots of money. He may have good intentions but, they are far from the actual.

The issue here is not about Kanye Vs fashion houses or corporate brands, the issue at hand is that Kanye has simply become an arrogant brat who believes that he is a demi-god with the midas touch. His interaction with Sway highlighted something that we all see but he simply doesn’t, his rude, arrogant, narcissistic ways that shows no respect for others. His attempts to belittle sway on the fashion questions was proof that he cannot take counsel, cannot take criticism or listen to a different point of view other than his own. He is an uncultured loud mouth, with little or no fashion experience, who rubs people up the wrong way and point blank is bad for business. His attitude and critical comments have made him a corporate leper, with a pestilent touch that would ruin the reputation of any brands or organization foolish enough to engage with him, as he is not there to be part of a team, philosophy or ideals, but rather just to build his own legacy and bank balance at others expense. He lacks refinement, class, dignity and integrity and being surrounded by sycophants all day has clearly changed him for the worse. He is the new Damon Dash and sadly i fear that it may already be too late to save Kanye west from himself. He must learn that self-praise is no recommendation and genius and madness are too sides of the same coin but not stupidity !
