Timbaland Announces 'Opera Noir' Musical

  /  05.05.2016

“Hamilton” better watch out. Timbaland is teaming up with Leftfield Pictures for “Opera Noir,” a scripted hip-hop musical based on the producer’s next and final album of the same name.

“I couldn’t have found a better partner than Leftfield Pictures and David George for ‘Opera Noir,'” said Timbo. “They understand my vision for this project, which I’ve had for years, and I’m confident they will help bring this to life for everyone to see.”

The autobiographical album and musical delves into Timbaland’s ups and downs, and will address the mogul-producer-rapper’s upbringing, poverty, substance abuse, and more.

Timbo, who has also worked on the music for Fox’s “Empire,” will executive produce the project, along with Leftfield’s David George, Adam Sher, and Will Nothacker, and Jungle Punks president Jared Gutstadt.

Leftfield CEO David George celebrated the news by praising Timbo’s career.

“Tim’s unbelievable candor about his experiences and difficult past help illustrate one of the most epic success stories in the industry,” said George. “We’re fortunate to be part of the ‘grand finale’ of an artist whose innovative and inspiring musical contributions have helped shape the business and will influence artists for years to come.”

It is currently unclear where “Opera Noir” will land. It is reportedly going to be shopped to networks as a special. According to Variety, that will include various potential formats, “from a standalone special (given the recent success of Fox’s ‘Grease Live!’) to a limited series.”

It’s been a long time coming for Tim, who announced Opera Noir back in 2014. “It’s a culture thing,” he said at the time. “It’s the truth. It’s just about life in general. My life. My personal life, and I found myself as an artist and human being and as a man. I found who I am.”
