J. Cole Visits San Quentin State Prison

  /  08.01.2017

In the midst of his “4 Your Eyez Only Tour,” J. Cole paid a visit to San Quentin State Prison near San Francisco, where he met with inmates.

Taking to Instagram, Dreamville president and longtime J. Cole manager Ibrahim Hamad explained why this was an unforgettable experience.

“We got the opportunity to spend the day at San Quentin State Prison talking and meeting inmates who will never see the outside again,” he wrote. “That experience was a life changing experience and wish I had the ability to put that in a caption but that wouldn’t be doing it justice.”

Cole’s San Quentin visit comes while he treks around North America on the “4 Your Eyez Only Tour,” which is centered around life behind bars. The Fayetteville rapper has been wearing an inmate jumpsuit on every show and the stage is designed to look like a prison yard.

Much of Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only release also focuses on incarceration and social injustice. “Have you ever seen your brother go to prison as you cry?” he raps on “Immortal.” “Have you ever seen a motherfuckin’ ribbon in the sky?”

On the title track, Cole brings the theme up once again. “I dedicate these words to you and all the other children affected by the mass incarceration in this nation,” he raps. “That sent your pops to prison when he needed education.”

Featuring Anderson .Paak, Cole’s “4 Your Eyez Only Tour” is set to continue through Aug. 20.

Tickets are available now.
