Video: Azealia Banks - 'Soda'

  /  03.21.2018

Four years after dropping her debut Broke With Expensive Taste, Azealia Banks serves up a video for “Soda.”

The sun-soaked Jahvel Brown-directed clip finds Banks bouncing through a desolate desert landscape, resting on rock formations, and singing about her ex in a gold ensemble.

In between Azealia’s scenes, a drummer breaks into a passionate performance. Meanwhile, the sun shines all over Banks, creating light flares that dance around her throughout the visual’s creative cuts.

“This song is about my time in 2012,” she explained. “Everything in the world was going well for me but I was just so sad.”

Following a breakup, Azealia turned to hip-hop, where she felt disrespected by men. “I felt abandoned [and] worthless, and it showed,” she added. “I began lashing out at everything and everyone without any ability to control the storm that was brewing inside of me. The public could tell that something was eating me up. But I was too proud to admit that my heart was breaking in more ways than one.”

Azealia said she also visited a psychiatrist after self-medicating for anxiety and depression. But prescription drugs made her “paranoid and irritable.”

“I spent most of my days rolling around in bed crying, or staring blankly at the wall, deep in the grasp of whatever combination of shit I had in my system,” she added. “There was a time when my dresser counter was cluttered with empty prescription bottles, half-smoked joints, empty wine bottles and take-out receipts …. which is when I wrote the first words to this song.”

Banks is moving on. Her next album, Fantasea II: The Second Wave, is due this year.
