Kehlani Celebrates Sex Workers in 'Can I' Video

  /  07.30.2020

Kehlani celebrates her fellow women in the empowering video for “Can I.”

The quarantine-style clip, which she co-directed under her Hyphy Williams alias, is an homage to sex workers and stars Black queer and trans people from the online sex industry, who were handpicked by Kehlani herself. They strut for the cameras on the “Can I” livestream portal while Kehlani watches and tips them.

“our video is a ode to sex work. honoring sex workers. uplifting their movement. that’s it,” explained Kehlani. “it’s just a celebratory cute ass video that feels good. S/O ALL THE BADDIES.”

The song, which appears on Kehlani’s album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t, features Tory Lanez. Despite the controversy surrounding the shooting involving Megan Thee Stallion, his verse is still on the song, but he does not appear in the video. However, Kehlani says an upcoming deluxe edition of her album will feature a “new verse.”

“full transparency cuz i believe in that with my following, his verse is still on the song, the video is solo. new verse on the deluxe,” she tweeted.

“Can I” is the latest self-directed clip out of Kehlani’s Honey Shot Productions. It follows visuals for “Bad News,” “Open (Passionate),” “F&MU,” “Everybody Business,” and “Toxic.”
