Report: DJ Khaled Wants to Run Epic Records

  /  05.23.2017

They don’t want DJ Khaled to run a label…Or do they?

Shortly after L.A. Reid was ousted from Epic Records, an industry insider told Page Six that the “I’m the One” hitmaker was lobbying for his old gig.

“He was petitioning to get that job,” said the anonymous source. “He’s like, ‘I make more happen than anyone in the game, why would I not be considered to run the label?'”

The super producer isn’t the only person asking for the job and a source said he isn’t likely to get it. “Khaled is a big hype machine — not a person who’s running a record label,” they said. “My guess is [Sony Music UK CEO] Jason Iley will run either Columbia or Epic or they will take [RCA president] Tom Corson … and put him at Columbia or Epic.”

There are other rumors about the label, including one that finds Epic folding into RCA, but the imprint’s future remains unknown. “Not even Epic execs know what’s going on,” said a source. “There’s been no communication.”

Epic’s parent company Sony has not issued a statement on the matter beyond one that said “L.A. Reid will be leaving the company.”

L.A. left the label on May 11. Days later, a co-worker accused Reid of sexually harassing her.

At the time of his departure, Khaled posted a parting message to Reid on Instagram. It read: “WE LOVE YOU LA REID,” and its caption added: “Bless up @la_reid bless up from me @wethebestmusic and the @epicrecords team !”

Currently, Khaled is working on his Grateful album, which is set to drop later this year. The follow-up to last year’s Major Key has already spawned the Jay Z and Beyoncé-assisted “Shining” and the chart-topping single “I’m the One,” which features Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Quavo, and Lil Wayne.
