Lil Yachty and Carly Rae Jepsen Recreate 'It Takes Two'

  /  02.07.2017

Almost 30 years after the original, Lil Yachty teams up with Carly Rae Jepsen to recreate Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s classic 1988 party starter “It Takes Two” for Target.

The sponsored collaboration was produced by Mike WiLL Made-It, who gives the original a revamped feel. Meanwhile, Lil Boat flips a famous Rob Base verse into a new one about himself.

“I wanna rock right now,” raps Yachty, who was also recently in a Sprite ad. “I’m Lil Yachty and I’m down if you’re down / I’m not the most lyrical kid known / Yet I’m known to keep the party goin’.” Later, he adds: “Positivity is what made us famous.”

So far, only a snippet of the collaboration has been released, but the full version is said to feature a rap verse from Carly, who also handles the hook.

“You get some strange pitches in your lifetime, and this was definitely one of them,” Carly told EW. “I got a late-night phone call from my A&R person, who was like, ‘We’re missing one verse, and they’re wondering if you wouldn’t mind writing a rap and coming in and recording it tonight?’ I was like, ‘Uh, you guys realize I don’t rap, right? That sounds crazy.’

“It was one of the most intimidating moments of my career being in the room with Mike WiLL and Yachty and 16 other friends of theirs just partying,” she added. “They’re like, ‘Alright, go perform your first-ever rap in front of actual professional rappers!’ There’s nothing more terrifying than that. But they were really helpful.”

The three-minute spot was directed by Roman Coppola (“Mozart in the Jungle”) and choreographed by Mandy Moore (La La Land). It won’t air until Sunday (Feb. 12) during the Grammys, but the song itself is set to drop Friday (Feb. 10).
