Chance the Rapper's 'The Big Day' Debuts at No. 2

  /  08.05.2019

The Big Day makes its big debut.

Chance the Rapper’s long-awaited debut album opened at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 108,000 equivalent album units (27,000 in album sales) earned in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 1.

The Big Day marks Chance’s highest-charting project yet and his first to be simultaneously sold and released on streaming services. His mixtapes, 2012’s 10 Day and 2013’s Acid Rap, were released to streaming services for the first time in June. Acid Rap bowed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, while 10 Day debuted at No. 73. Coloring Book, which was previously only available on Apple Music before its wide release in June, peaked at No. 8 in June 2016.

Chance lost the No. 1 spot to another rapper. NF scores his second leader on the Billboard 200 with The Search, which opened with 130,000 equivalent album units (84,000 in album sales), earning the fourth-largest week for a rap album in 2019.

Both NF and Chance boosted their sales with merchandise/album bundles. Chance bundled The Big Day with an access code to the pre-sale for his upcoming tour.

YBN Cordae makes his first entry on the Billboard 200 with his debut The Lost Boy. The album, which features Meek Mill, Pusha-T, and Chance, opened at No. 13 with 28,000 units.

Elsewhere, Ed Sheeran’s No.6 Collaborations Project falls 1-3 (58,000), Chris Brown’s Indigo rises 6-5 (40,000), Lil Nas X’s 7 slides 4-6 (39,000), and Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You remains at No. 7 (37,000).
